Good job knarfeng,
dispatch,
Right at this moment in time, there are three versions of the 300 series slipjoints as newly made.
The long produced black scaled USA made 301,303,309 and 305. Sold by lots of folks. USA will be on the face of the main blade tang.
The off shore made version with numbers that don't have zero in the middle, like 373 or 383. These will have country of orgin marked on reverse of one of the blades.
Just out from the Idaho factory and made in the USA. Is a new style of the USA made 300 series. The Dymondwood series with dark treated wood scales and the new blue anvil Buck shield on the scale. These come in the standard 'zero' series, 301,303,309 and 305. They are fairly new and only starting to get commonly stocked at retailers at the moment. I have a nice 301.
Steel on the old and new USA styles is still 420HC with Bos heat treat. Offshore knives have been held to high standards as you can read from many statements in this forum. Statements have been made that Buck would like to bring as much work back to the US as is possible in the future as business improves.
Which one should you get, heck most folks here, especially the stout hearted patriots, will get only the USA made old style or new Dymondwood and be happy. Some will quietly get the less costly offshore knife and comment they are OK with a whisper.
What I say, look at em' all and get what you can afford and what knife 'sings' in your hand. Just don't start collecting the old ones, I have enough competition as it is...
If you want to know more on the history of the series, do a search of this forum using the model number or go to the Buck Knives website and check them all out.
