Oh man, I love the 301's (and 303's). I don't think you can go wrong hunting out an older contract model, or picking up a new one at a store. Different strokes, etc. If you want to try out the pattern without putting too much money into it, the 371's are another option. I have a couple and they're great. Plus, if you take them on an adventure in the woods (or wherever), you can hand to a nephew and not be too concerned if he drops it on the trail. I got mine back from said nephew, but my heart might have dropped if it had been a stag 301. The Buck website just put some new 371's up. The bone handled version is dead cheap at wally world near me.
Here's an older photo of a 371 (that I Rit-dyed, didn't like, bleached with hydrogen peroxide, and Rit-dyed again) with that 2-bladed 301 you like:
Here's a bunch of flat ground 301's. Three of them have 2 blades. The black one is an older Camillus-made 301.
And this one is in my pocket right now:
As you can see, there's a little blade rub when the clip and sheepsfoot are closed. I've had this for a couple years and just noticed the rub this morning. The cutting edge is fine. It's one of my favorite slippies. I checked my other 301's and they don't have it.
One of my absolute favorites is a plain black 303 that I picked up at an outdoor store a couple years ago. Nothing special in how it looks, but everything about the fit/finish is perfect. There's some great stuff out there.
Let us know what you end up with!
