Buck 301 question

Fishhunter,

The Buck 301 first appeared in 1966 and was a contract knife made by Schrade. The Schrade design could not be repaired, which caused a problem for warranty work, and in 1971 Camillus began producing the 301 for Buck. Finally, in 1985 Buck took over manufacturing of the 301.

Fishhunter,

Here are some photos of early 301s. The first is the 1st Version made by Schrade in 1966. Notice that there are handle pins, the bolsters are grooved and the sheepsfoot blade is visible from the side view; most importantly, the blade rivets are not visible. The second is the first Camillus-made 301 from 1971 with handle pins that are slightly smaller than the Schrade version, the bolsters are smooth, and the sheepsfoot blades not visible from the side view. The tang stamp reads "BUCK/Made in USA" and neither of these knives has a model number stamped on the tang. The third photo is of a knife that is a little unusual. It is a 1st Version made by Schrade, but if you look closely you will see blade rivets on the bolsters. This is one of very few Schrade-made 301s repaired by Buck using through rivets. After less than a dozen attempted repairs that didn't work very well, Buck decided to just replace the Schrade knives sent in for warranty work.
