I've been eying one for a while, and I think I've finally convinced myself to buy one. I'm just wondering, are there any certain tang stamps I should look out for? I only own one buck, so I'm not too knowledgeable.

My friend has one from the early 70's. He told me it's made by Schrade though, which confuses me. Any info on that?

Thanks.

Oh. Awesome. So are these Schrade contract knives rare? Anything special that sets them apart from this years 301's?

Thanks.

Yah, this is a really interesting subject, and complex enough to keep you looking for a long time. A first version Schrade would look similar to a current 301 but would be different in almost every detail. The blades are made from different steel. The profile of the Schrade is more serpentine. The bolsters are grooved and you can’t see an axel pin because the construction technique is completely different. The liners are made of brass. There are brass rivets holding on the scales. The tang of the main blade is stamped BUCK/MADE IN/USA. The model number 301 does not appear on the first Schrade anywhere although early Cami knives can have it on the back side of the tang. These days a first Schrade is worth more but a nice one can still be had for less than a 1965 Pontiac with holes in the floor boards and no muffler. Which would I rather have? For shear coolness and the 440C, the Schrade, but I would be completely happy with the current production knife in ever other regard.

I can't add much to what Willthebarb has already told you as I'm really new at collecting the 3xx series and I'm still learning. I've only been looking for them for about 6-7 years and there's a ton of stuff to learn. To answer your question, though, "Is there any tang stamp that is better then others?" Nope, not in my oppinion. Are there tang stamps that are more desireable? Absolutely!! Not in any particular order, but....... Schrade made, early Camilus made, middle Camilus made, late Camilus made, early Buck made, middle Buck made, late Buck made, contemporary Buck made, Chinese Buck made in Red Bone, or Chinese Buck made in wood............. Soon as you get all of those, then you can start on the same versions of 303, 305, 311, 313................ It never stops.

Congrats on your first one and hope you find your next one, soon! Stay in touch. Jack

A Schrade made 303, or a Camilus made 301, or a early 313, or.....Like I said, it never ends. The Schrade made Bucks have a particular feel to them that I like, though, and I'm still looking for my first Schrade 301! Jack :p

How much is a excellent or mint condition 1st or 2nd version Schrade made 301 worth these days?

For the high end, have a gander at 280222751310. This is the Mount Everest though. I climb lesser hills. 300Bucks

Haven't drug this photo out in a while, let's dust off the cob-webs. 300$s

Grooved bolster is 1, 3 big brass scale rivet schrades are 2 and 3 (all not shown), photo is Cami's 4,5,6,7top to bottom.

Thanks $300.

Is the version two without the threaded bolsters considerably less if you can find one? Appreciate the info.

You can fine any knife at any price, if your lucky and look hard enough. That said, If I were 'selling' I would value quality and age as higher prices. Buy what you like, look at the pictures, which looks like a knife you want to hold. Know the steel if you care, pre 81- 440c,81-94 -425M, post 94 - 420. Then look for one you will be happy looking at and holding in you hand. A knife you get ready to sharpen like preparing for surgery, trying to keep the blade alive for as long as possible by holding on to every molecule of metal except for what makes its sharp.

Generally its the Schrades, then the early Camis for price. But any that are mint in the correct box will bring a bonus. If you can just stop with one your a better man than me. 300$s
