I mentioned in a couple of threads that this knife was coming.

I opened the box and thought it was so beautiful that a photo session was in order.

This will be my new EDC knife from now until I find something that I like better. Have been trying to go more minimal lately with the things that I carry everyday and so far I have succeeded. This knife has such great detail, fit and finish, that I dont see myself carrying much more than this for awhile.

Plus, I love Buck knives, Buck steel, and Buck Design. The fact that this knife has a separate layer for each blade is also quite interesting, I think.

Here are the photos. Gentlemen, I present the legendary Buck 301 (a little cheesy, huh?):

That's a good looking knife!

Are those Diamondwood scales? They look a little different than the others I've seen photos of.

That's what it was advertised as on eBay, but I couldn't be sure by reading the code on the box.

From the other ads that I've seen, I would have to say that I think they are Diamondwood scales.

I dont know the significance of the "Diamondwood scale" advertising, whether that's a real type of wood or thats what Buck calls the grain style, but I do know that I really appreciate how spectacular this knife looks.

And thanks, Im sure Ill enjoy this knife a lot.

mine's yellow and it always makes me happy when i have it in my pocket.

nice choice. i like the shade of your scales. i have the old school delrin handled 301 and it has to be my favorite stockman.

Not much you can't handle with a Buck 301 in pocket! BTW, nice pics.

I am glad to see GP is enjoying his 301 and showing us good pics. It should serve well.

Dymondwood is a registered trademark of a plastic/wood composition material made by Rutland Plywood.
http://www.rutply.com/products/dymondwood.html

Bascially it is thin birch wood sheets compressed and heated with plastic to make a composition material. It is used for all kinds of things, even pistol grips and fancy ink pen barrels. It can be turned on a lathe and readily milled. Hence its use in knife scales.

The front side of GPs knife is unique and reverse is more the normal look. I would like to see a little better dymondwood scale matching from the Buck factory floor. One side light and one side dark does not impress me and I can only hang my head in wonder. GPs knife is attractive in that it is so different side to side. I actually like the lighter grey colored DW over the dark. If you want equal sides then you will need to go to a 'hands-on' store to sort thru the stock to buy your knife.........300Bucks

I could not agree more! The Buck 301 is a classic...I carry one daily.

I sent my Buck back 30 years latter and they just put an new blade on it and made it look new. As KC and the Sunshine Band sang: Yup unha Thats the way I like it!

GP, I carried a Buck 301 as my main go-to knife for 25 years and on four continents, and it never failed to do what I needed to do as far as cutting. It was more than a knife, it was a daily companion from the time I bought it in 1967 at an army PX, tot he mid 90's when I started to get infected with the knife accumulation disease. It's still ready and serviceable. The 301 is the Sherman tank of pocket knives.

Thanks guys, I am really enjoying the knife so far.

Very interesting to hear about the Diamondwood Scales too, I had no idea that it was a composition material.

I have to say though, I dont mind the fact that the two different scales are lighter/darker than the other side. I wanted a Buck 301, I ordered one, this is the one that they gave ME.

Its my knife. Its probably unique, but it might not be, its really no matter.

Im sure this knife will serve me well for years and years to come. Theres nothing that suggests otherwise.

GP,
Yours is unique. I have never seen a DW scale with that shading......but I only look at a couple hundred a year.....go forth and cut with pride.....

Hey you could get a 301 collection going of DW scale variations......I see a display case in your future......

You at least will have to get the Red DW chairman 301.....

You could close your account, it is theoretically possible to get out of this forum, but in practice it is very hard to leave. I'm betting you won't be able to. But you are in the company of like minded people, so stay and enjoy.

The Bucks are not expensive. Just start throwing your pocket change up under the dresser and then mine it every couple of months. - Ed

Looks like the dye didnt penetrate as well on one side.I like it better than the dark.Great knife and pics. The yellow delrin is my favorite, but you have to have a classic black sawcut also. The single blades are really cool.Yea,it gets expensive to hang out here.:)

There's nothing cheesy about the Buck 300s.

This place is sort of like the "Hotel California."

You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave!.

:D

Don't try to fight it, it's like a rip tide, you have to go with it. At least collection Buck knives is not as bad as drinking. Like the man said, toss your change in an ash tray every night, and in a month you'll have a new knife. If you like your stockman, there's the cadet, the ...
