I just got a Buck 301X...Trying to figure out if this is 420HC or 425M?
So it's a 1990.
I've read internet opinions that say 420HC?
Stamp is...Buck
301X
USA
Any help appreciated!

If it follows the 110,as far as steel is concerned, then it's 425,since the 110 changed to 420HC in 1992.

There are members who know more about the 300 series, that will help in this matter.

Can someone help with this? What steel was used for the blades on this knife? I think probably 425M, but I am not sure.

You're correct Doc, the blade steel used by Buck up to 1992/1993 was 425M ('M' for Modified). Here's the composition...

Carbon: 0.40-0.54%
Chromium: 13.50-15.00%
Manganese: 0.50%
Molybdenum: 0.60-1.00%
Phosphorus: 0.04%
Silicon: 0.80%
Sulfur: 0.03%
Vanadium: 0.10%

See you guys don't need me at all. I will only add, I don't think the change from 425M to 420hc occurred at once in the Buck made 300 models. They used up the 425M, so lets say they changed the steel on some in 92 and some in 93. Please, don't make me go look up which models when...ha 300
