Does anyone know if the Buck 303's clip blade only has a swedge on one side, or does mine have a bad grind? I can't find any pictures on line that show the other side of the blade Here are pictures of both sides of mine:

front side (has swedge)

back side (no swedge)

I have seen stockman blades with a cut swedge on the mark side, and a drawn swedge on the pile side to ease the secondary blades sliding past, but I have no clue in this situation. Hopefully someone that knows about Bucks will be able to answer.

Every Camillus Buck I've seen has this type of swedging, so maybe Buck just kept the design from them? As for why I have no idea.. I also have a Craftsman 9470 with a single-sided swedge.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it's kind of like the swedge equivalent of a chisel grind!

My 2014-vintage 301's clip blade is ground the same way, as well as an older Camillus-made 307 I've got. The feature isn't unique to Buck's knives alone, but it does seem to be part of the designed 'trim' on these models.

This question comes up every once in a while. The swedge is on one side by design.

If you close the knife and look at the back of the blade spine you'll notice the back corner has been angled as well, but only the outside corner. I think the blade spine grind and the back corner beveling is done to make the knife more pocket friendly.

Mine are the same. Ergonomics? I think it's for pocket and/or hand comfort when closed or using the sheepsfoot or spey blade.

Yep - I've got two of the modern production 303 - they both look just like that one. I also have a '70's style Camillus version which has an altogether different blade design.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I haven't been carrying this knife much, but I recently revived my love of the stockman pattern and have been revisiting the three that I've had for awhile, plus I've picked up a couple larger framed ones recently. Maybe I'll have to add a 301 to the family soon.

If you like the larger style stockman - check out the 307 - they were discontinued in the 90's. But there are plenty of them running around in resale market.
