Buck 307 Question

I've never seen one. Craig Heflebower (300bucks) did a review of the 307 in the June 2011 Newsletter. I gave it a quick review and there is no mention of a smooth variation. My understanding of the scales is that the sawcut pattern is actually molded, not literally "sawcut" as in the name. That suggests to me your scales have been buffed smooth. I don't think it would really take much as I've seen well used knives with the "sawcut" pretty worn.

Speaking of Craig, does anyone have current information about him? He was an important fixture in our Buck Universe for many years.

I don’t have a conclusive answer but it looks to me like it was made that way, although I’ve never seen one either.

The Sawcut models are flat in the Sawcut area and rounded near the bolsters. You can see an abrupt transition from the rounded sections to the flat Sawcut sections.

If the knife in question was sanded smooth, a lot of material would have to be removed to smooth out those transitions. This knife doesn’t look like that much material was sanded away.

Those were my thoughts as well, Rick. If I were to just go by the look and feel of the knife, it would never have even occurred to me that it had been sanded/buffed. However, the fact that I can’t find anything online regarding a smooth black 307, I don’t know what to think. Hopefully someone comes along that can add some clarification.

Of course that was long after the 307 was out of production, and the 307 was always made by Camillus. Where is 300Bucks when we need him?
I hate to say it but when I looked it looks like the last time he was here was Sept 2022.

I don't have an answer to your question in regards to whether Buck released a 307 with smooth scales, but to me the scales look like they have been smoothed somehow. I don't think it was sanding though since the badge, bolsters and pin don't show signs of scratching. Either someone was very good in their sanding or another method was used to smooth the handles. I think that possibly a chemical was used to smooth the lines. You can use acetone to smooth ABS plastic from 3D printing. Acetone isn't supposed to react with Delrin, but I am sure there are chemicals that would interact with Delrin allowing you to melt the Delrin and smooth the handle without damaging or scratching the pin, badge and bolster. Just a thought that could be totally wrong.

But the shield does look sanded. Part of the handle on the hammer is gone. Any scratches from the rougher grits of sandpaper are pretty easy to remove by using subsequent finer grits of sandpaper.

In the past when those older 300 series were sent back for a SPA and buffed it would remove the sawcut. We adjusted our process on how to SPA the 300 and don't polish the handle and concentrate on the bolsters. riversidedep riversidedep made a great observation that the shield does appear to be sanded/buffed down. It is possible the customer did it themselves or was done by our warranty department some time ago.

Thanks so much for chiming in. I had never considered that it could possibly be a spa treatment, from the past. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Lance

This smoothed Wrangler 307 made its way into my pocket here in Virginia. Thank you, Lance The Fort The Fort .

Whether it was done by Buck before they changed their SPA methods, or by a previous owner, it’s very smooth in the hand and feels great.

Glad that you like it Josh! I’m happy that it went to a good home, and to someone who’s going to get some enjoyment from it. Lance
