Buck 317 Folding Hunter Question

Were these knives made by Camillus or Buck? If Camillus were they just 440A steel. If Buck made any were any late enough for the Bos heat treat. I like to try to find one if they aren't 440 A steel.

All of the 317s were made by Camillus. As for the steel, that's always open to question with Camillus contract knives. There is a good chance they were 440A, but there is a good chance they were something else. A common answer is that Camillus used the least expensive steel possible. There was a thread on here not long ago that was just as vague as my answer.

Camillus made them. The steel is a good question.

Camillus had a habit of using whatever steel happened to be the most convenient at the time (although they, I think, always used good quality steel......haven't heard many complaints). Could very well be 440A.

Bert I hope they never used 420j steel.
