Hi
Novice here and a gramma
I have a Buck 117, very nice shape. I am particullary interesed in what it is called. The shield it has shows a hammer beating on the back of the knife---I thought that was a bad thing to do. Seems rather large so I thought it must be a hunter.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who could steer me in the right direction to find out more, however I figured this is the place to get answers
Thank you

ptgramma,
The model 317 was named the Trailblazer and the pattern is indeed a folding hunter. Camillus made this knife on contract for Buck starting in about 1972. It was removed from the catalog in 1986. I am planning to do an article on the model 317 for an upcoming Buck Collectors Club newsletter.
Look for it in the March issue. It is my recollection that the hammer, bolt and knife logo is an old Buck advertising theme first used by Hoyt H. Buck as he demonstrated the strength and sharpness of his blades. You are correct that this procedure is likely to damage a blade and should not be emulated.
