So I see the email today saying that Buck is offering 40% off. Out of curiosity I compared the Vantage Force Pro from the Buck site to what Amazon offers them for...

Buck $81

Amazon $73

Sigh~

What's wrong with that picture?

You've got to figure that even during a sale if you undercut your distributors you end up hurting yourself as a company. Like many manufacturers Buck sells at retail on their website (most of the time for most of their products). Spyderco to does the same as one example. The fact that they are offering a 40% off doesn't automatically make them the cheapest. The Amazon offering is listed at 45% off retail. That 5% makes a difference

Do they still offer free s/h over $50? That would bring the price closer!

Amazon offers free shipping on any order $25 or more if the item actually comes from Amazon and not one of their supported stores... and it even does it for some of them, too.

I rarely find a better deal, total price (item+shipping), than Amazon. I did just get a Spyderco Spyderhawk for $65 on Ebay with free shipping, when Amazon went from $65 to $86 for the knife recently.

I've bought all sorts of goodies - including a Panasonic commercial vacuum, Hornady Case Tumbler, and B&D lawn mower - via AMAZON and their free 'Super Saver' s/h. Not everything is available that way - or even consistently from day to day. A case in point - I ordered an item that way after a search - as offered - only to be told that the item was no longer available. A quick search revealed it was still available for the same $50 - just add the $7.50 s/h. Some Buck deals are pretty good - 060 Hoodlum $112 - 113 Skinner $45 - for example (I have it on good authority that Santa shops there...).

Need to peruse the Buck site again...

The real savings from Buck is in some of the web specials. The 105 Pathfinder on the Amazon marketplace sites are $39.36 and $39.44. I bought two of the web special 105's for $30. each. The handle was brass and rosy dymondwood instead of the standard aluminum and phenolic, but it's essentially the same beast.

The REALLY good deals come from the Pro site for BCCI members. Even though you can buy just two knives a year there, the prices are impossible (I think) to beat anywhere.

For example, the Vantage Force Pro @ 60% off and free shipping:

Right, not everything is available that way; as I said, if the item is being carried, sold, and the order filled BY Amazon, as opposed to the plethora of retailers who have a store on their site, the free shipping applies at $25.

If the item is being sold by one of their online retailers/stores they support, it MAY not be... they will provide the free shipping for some of them, and others they won't, depending on the arrangement they have with the specific store on their site.

If Amazon has a $25+ knife in their own stock, it ships free; but if they sell out, other retailers with stores on Amazon may still have it available, but it will not be free shipping because the order is not actually being fulfilled BY Amazon. That's the only way there'd be inconsistency in free shipping from 1 day to the next on the same item.

Yeah, that's going to be impossible to beat. BTW, what is BCCI membership and what does it entail?

Dave, I've never been able to get onto the pro site, even though I'm a BCCI member, because my e-mail was already registered with Buck! Could you show me the pro site page with the sharpeners? I'd like to see those prices. I'd have to set up a new e-mail account and address just to get on the pro site, but it may be worth it. (And do sharpeners count as knife purchases???)

It's a membership in the Buck Collector's Club. You get access to their website which has all kinds of great info on Buck knives among other things. You get a newsletter a few times a year, a Buck Catalog and price list every year and access to the Buck Pro site for some great deals. You will also be on a list to receive notifications of special offerings from Buck that are available only to members. The cost is (starting in 2012) $25/year for annual members and $125 for a Life membership. The club also produces members only knives every year that come with your membership number engraved on the blade. They also offer other knives that aren't numbered, but are not available anywhere else.

I'm sure that I've forgotten other perks of membership, but you get the idea. In my opinion, access to their website for a Buck lover is worth the cost alone.

The sharpeners don't count as knives and you are also allowed 2 per year. Same with the sheaths. You can buy 25 items from the "Buck Stuff" page.

Wow, those are good prices. I guess I'll have to sign up for a new e-mail acct. with them.

THANK YOU for the screen shots.

You're more than welcome. I also had the e-mail issue and had to use a different one. It was well worth it.

I've signed up to BCCI, at least for twelve months. Have just heard from Buck that they do in fact do international shipping, but require International Money Orders or Wire Transfers for payment. Hard to fathom in this day and age of secure servers, credit cards and Payal but if that's what it takes I guess it's what I'll do. Now I just need to hope my membership sorted out before the end of the month so I can take advantage of the specials.

Plumberdv,

I signed up on the Pro Site, but haven't joined the BCCI yet. Are the discounts about the same?

I don't think you get any discounts just by signing up there. You have to meet certain requirements, being a BCCI member gives you discounts as does other thing.
