as I've been going thru some of my old buck knives, I ran across a buck 425, but it has the 526 blade in it. Does anyone know if this was common, seeing as how the blade for both was about the same? I thought it was kind of neat to have.

The 526 blade and the 425 are exactlay the same; both of them are 505 blades. They all just have different stamps on them. At times, there have been odds and ends of produciton runs that wind up getting the wrong blade put in them. They are a bit of an oddity, but not unheard of.
