I picked up a 450 (1998) for $1 with a beat up handle, side to side blade play and it looks like if you push down on the top of the blade a little hard it unlocks. Looks like it was used to pry with. I'm assuming it's not worth sending to Buck? Other than those issues the blade is in fairly good shape and got sharp real easy.

i'm new to Bucks in general but the protege is the first one i bought years ago. it always did a great job for what i needed in a wet environment. still use it in my tackle box and if it needed repair it'd be worth the cost of shipping to me.

thats very nice offer and took me by surprise..until i read how my post read.

wasn't trying to say if you don't want it i'll pay to ship it to me (but would be glad to do so!) but if I were in your situation it would be worth it to call Buck and see if it would be repaired/replaced under wtty. if so it would be worth it to me to pay the shipping to Buck to get it fixed/replaced.

sorry for coming across suggesting ya send it to me, not intended that way. i'd suggest ya call em and check on wtty service.

I don't think they would fix it for sure as I'm sure they would call it abuse, I would. Offer stands if you want it.

The 450 is a real unsung hero in ways, solid knife in a very light design.

I've got one that I blatantly admit has been abused by folder standards (batonned) and such and it's fine.

Got a second one still in the blister pack stashed somewhere as a backup.

I hope it works out that ya get it fixed or replaced. For years that was the only Buck I had and never really appreciated it. but it never failed me and was often turned to when others just fell short. carried mine strapped to my BC while diving freshwater for few years and worked like a charm.

hope it works out, would rather you get to see how handy it can be then give it away. good luck on it and thanks again.

Buck will repair it, or replace it with something as close to it as possible. Well, thats what they did with me once.

Well on Jan 19th the 450 went in the mail today. Today when I got home from work there was a package from Post Falls Idaho waiting on my desk. The Invoice inside says: "Broken lock and loose blade, Unrepairable" And inside white paper was a new 450 with a 2009 date code.

So a big  to Buck! Also included was a 25% off card to use on the Buck website.

I had one other experience with Buck Warranty dept years ago. I had a 124 that I was cutting away small (1/4" thick) branches on a trail to my deer blind. On cutting one I heard a "bink" In the fading light I see what looks like a bite out of the blade about 2 inches back from the tip! Sent it in and they replaced it straight off.

i wont lie, reading posts like that bring a smile to my face.

more of what buck is about
happy folks with the best knives around!
i can think of no other company that takes
customer service to heart like buck!

Don't know if it helped, but I name dropped the Bladeforum in my letter to Buck.

They probably appreciate that feedback, and now will have a good feeling that you will spend your next 5 years monthly allowance on Buck Knives :D:D
