I am looking for a new folder for camping and hiking. I don't need to tell you that there is a huge amount of folders for those purposes, but now I found out that a Dutch webshop sells Buck 450RD Protégé knives and this knife is within my budget. Does anyone of you have experience with this knife? I am especially interested in the quality of the handle. Is it strong and how is its grip when you are working in the rain?

Thanks,
Harayasu

I have one laying here and I think this one is a sleeper as far as Bucks go.

I like the rubber grips, the grooved spine where your thumb rests, and the fact that it is a lockback versus a liner or frame lock. The slot in the end of the handle could be used for a lanyard if you wish.

This one has a partial serrated blade that I don't much care for, but at times I have had a need for.

The rubber grip seems hold nice and tight.

I got this one in some trade thing and haven't carried or used it. There are some others here that have.

With it being a bit fatter than the knives I edc, it would probably need a sheath or just live in the hunting bag or truck.

The ones I have seen come up for sale usually run less than about $25 US

I have the partial serated version that I grabbed about 10 years ago as an impulse buy on sale. It never failed me and always seems to cut like a bigger knife. For years it was the only Buck knife I had and after realizing how often I just kept going back to it to get the job done it lead me to buy the 30 or so Bucks in the past couple of months!

Did a lot of water work and that grip and lanyard slot really proved handy. Am looking for a non-serated version now. To me it serves as the water environment 110/112 and is always clipped to my PFD when boating or BC when diving.

Great working knife for me, has taken all the use I can throw at it.

Haray,Welcome. My daughter got a 450 given to her from another Buck life member when they first came out in 1995.She uses it alot around the farm.On everything from cutting rope to whittling yucca poles and really likes it.The handle is very nonslip, its light and seems to be enough blade.Hope you enjoy yours.DM

I have 2 plain edge ones, one I use and the other still in the factory plastic package.

I agree with pack rat, these are real sleepers, that are in fact very good folders.

I have really put mine through some abuse and it is still going strong.

Thanks guys, I ordered it.

Since English is not my native language, I wondered what is meant when someone says a knife is a 'sleeper'.

Sleeper means in this content, a knife that does jump out at you and get a lot of attention by people, but it is a competent, well made knife and deserves better.

Sleeper can be other things besides a knife, it can be a person. Some actors who are quite good, but don't steal the show or otherwise seem to fall in the background, still never less, they are really good and should be looked at more closely.

Thanks I get it.

Today I received the knife and I think it is a great knife. When I picked the package out of the mailbox, I was really surprised that it was so light. The handle is nice, strong and it feels like it will not slip out of my hand. The blade is strong, sharp and locks very well. This will be my main blade when I go hiking and camping in the Norwegian mountains this summer.
