I have a Buck 475 Limited Edition knife. It is in a box that has the Buck Logo on the cover on the left side and the words Limited Edition on the lower right side. Exactly like the other Limited Edition knife I have. I am just looking to possibly get some more information on this particular knife. The label on the bottom of the box where the UPC code is says "475 ROSEWOOD HDL" and on the line under that it says "B475-SP5-0". Clearly the handle it rosewood and it has deer tracks engraved or burned into the handle scales and one cut out of the blade. I can't find a year mark on this knife. Any idea what year(s) it was produced. Should be pretty recent but a search of Buck's site for "475" brings up nothing more than a fleece pullover. Seems the whole model is discontinued. Other than the year of Mfg. I would like to know if the blade material is the standard buck 420HC or some other steel. Any idea what the approximate value of this knife is? Original price? I got mine clearance so I think I got a decent deal on it. It is a beautiful knife! :)

Hi Joe, Captain Caliber here. Looks like what you have is Buck Mini Mentor. That's what the 475 is. But the letters after the number aren't familiar. I have a 475RD and a 475ELK. One is a Running Deer profile and the other is an Elk profile. Pics below. Or at least one picture. You can email me for more pictures if you want. I can't think of what the letters SP stand for. I'm pretty sure these were a 2001 Production. Maybe even 2000. They were Limited but not serrialized. Let me know if the pic I sent is the same style as your knife. Bill

Most definately the same line but neither of these matches mine. Your's are nicer than mine I think. I don't have a digital camera or a picture so I'll see what I can get by throwing it on the scanner. If it's even close to usable I'll post, or email it to you. I really like the top one you have, that's very nice.

OK, I'll try and post the image here but if it doesn't show I will email it to you or you can go to the URL http://starbase4.com/images/475.jpg and view it that way. Also Capt. the sheath looks identical to the lower one you have with just the deer head on it.

One more thing, is there a web site that shows all of buck older knives with their specs, years of mfg etc.? There should be :)

Joe,

You have a Deer Tracks Mini Mentor that was made in 1999 or 2000. I don't have a 2000 catalog handy, but the same knife in the 1999 catalog has a walnut handle. MSRP was around $84, give or take a dollar or two. The blade steel is the standard 420HC. The SP stands for special project.

As far as a website with all the older Bucks listed, the Buck Collectors Club is in the process of developing a website that will contain a very thorough listing of all Buck knives along with as much information as possible and pictures when available. Access to the archives will be limited to club members, so if you're not a member of the BCCI, join up, you'll be glad you did.:D

I 100% agree with you that there SHOULD be a web site for all the older Buck Products, but at this point there isn't!:( :( Considering how many years Buck has been making knives in just a "factory" setting, not counting the real early years, can you imagine how big the web site would have to be, especially if there were photos of all the knives....

The best reference for older Bucks is either through this forum (years of collecting here!!!) or through older literature (catalogs, magazine ads, etc.) The Buck Collector's Club is in the process of getting their own web site up and running and from what I have heard, there should be some prime info there for us collectors.

Also, right now on eBay there is an auction running for a whole pile of old Buck Catalogs. I think the current price is around $50 - well worth it from what I have seen of what is being offered considering individual catalogs sell anywhere from $7 to $12 apiece.

Thanks guys. The handle is definately Rosewood so by that description I suspect 2000. That also fits in with my memory of about when I bought it which I think was sometime between early to mid 2001. I got it clearance for a little over half of that MSRP if memory serves me so that's not too bad. It didn't come with any paperwork in the box like the Capt's photo's showed came with his but that was most likely due to the fact that it was the display model. Why does there seem to be no date code on this knife? I clearly see the date code in the photo's the Capt sent me. Mine just says "BUCK" and then below that with more space than I see in the other photos and slightly smaller print it says "U.S.A.". As for joining the BUCK collectors club, I have considered it and probably will, but funds are very shot right now. Not only because I like Buck knives but because of the kind of personal company they show themselves to be. A rare quality in this day and age.
