When I close my newly acquired mint Buck 500, the blade travels on its own into the handle with good snap after a push, but the blade tip remains about one sixthteenth of an inch above the handle. Then I push the blade down, and it stays locked safely with tip inside the handle. Is this normal for a 500? I was surprised the knife did not close completely at first like all of my 110's do. I should add that my 500 feels very smooth when opening and closing.

It just took a little breaking in, and now my Buck 500 closes completely at first push with authoritative snap. I just love this knife. It is a great alternative when a 112 would be too bulky or heavy to carry.

Some of us [well, me actually] have noticed that some Bucks have a sludgey mix of buffing compound and blade lube in the pivot area, which can cause it to feel gritty or not close all the way (it gets in the tooth of the rockerbar and the blade notch as well as the flat of the blade). Flushing it good with WD-40 a couple times, and blowing the gunk out does a whole world of good... ;)

...Foe me, that is... :D

YMMV...
