Buck #500 Reconditioning?

I imagine this question has come up often. I have a Buck #500 Duke that my Father gave me years ago. The handle inserts are loose on their pins. Can I send this knife in to have the inserts reattached? They aren't wood so I'm not sure if anything can be done. This knife has sentimental value, not only because my Father gave it to me(mostly because of that) , but this knife has been on five continents while I was a crewchief in the Air Force. Can it be reconditioned? Who would I send the knife to? Thank Joe for any help you can give me either way.

Easy,

Go ahead and send the knife to:

Joe Houser
1900 Weld Blvd.
El Cajon, Ca. 92020

I will do everything i can to see that the knife is fixed for you.

Take care,

Joe, I sent my Model 500 out, you should see it Wenesday or Thursday.

Thank you very much,

David,

I have the knife and am going to give it to Wilde Bill to fix. Do you want a new blade? The one in it now is worn pretty good. I know the knife has sentimental value and fixing the handle should not be a problem. It just might end up with a blade from 2000.

Is that ok?

Joe,

The offer of a new blade is well beyond my expectations. I have given it some thought
and decided against replacing the blade. The knife would lose all character. I intend to retire the knife to a place of honor when it returns. The offer of a new blade illustrates
to me why Buck Knives are the best in the business!

Can you tell me the approximate time frame of manufacture and if the blade is 440C steel? Joe, thank you again for the great customer service.

David,
Will take care of the Duke as per your wishes. Thank you so much for the kind comments! It looks as though we used the burgandy micarta from when the knife was introduced in 1978 until about 1980. Another little tidbit about the Duke is that it has always been Chuck Buck's favorite knife.I "think" the steel is 425mod but i am not sure.
Hope this helps,

Joe,

Thank you for your quick reply. I rather like the micarta for handles. This nails down the date of manufacture to some time between 1978 to 1980. It also seems I'm in good company since the Duke is also my favorite Buck knife. You and the other people at Buck Knives have earned those nice comments I made.

David,
I had the inlays tightened up. It was hard to get Efrin to give the knife back without first buffing it up! Efrin has been reworking and repairing Buck knives for many years at Buck and takes great pride in what he does. Once i told him "why" he reluctantly gave me back the knife! I will have it shipped no later than 9/13. I hope you like it.

Take care,

Joe,
Please thank Efrin for returning my knife unbuffed. I promise the next time I send a knife in he can buff it as long as he likes. I didn't want to lose the character this knife has developed. I sure wish I was one of those 400 Harley riders that showed up. I'm getting ready to replace leaking base gaskets on my Harley here soon. Next time I'm in Calif., I WILL make time to come down and thank you personally Joe.

Dave,

Those 400 Harley riders are heading your way! I know that today they are supposed to be in Tucson. I'll bet you will hear them go by!
Take care,

Joe,
I received my knife back today and it looks great! Thank for your patience with my requests. Please thank Efrin and everyone else involved.
