I recently picked up a 1978 500 with the micarta scales anybody know
if the blade steel is 440 knife seems much tighter and overall
better built than the post 2000 500 I already had has anyone else found that older 500 series knives outclass newer ones or was this a freak occurance
 
I have an early 500 and have owned a couple of more recent ones. The old one is definitely better IMHO. I don't have the exact year info at hand, but I traced mine back and found that it has 440C blade steel. The scales are dark maroon micarta.
 
Ya mine has the dark maroon scales too looked up some old posts
here and it said the change from 440 to 420 was 81 for 110's
so everything probably caught up plus or minus a couple of years
does yours have the script style buck stamp
