Buck 501 date?

I have a Buck 501 that was my grandfather's. It does not have any of the stamps shown on the website, but the Buck stamp is in a script-like style. Does anyone have any idea of the age or value of this knife?

...Hi Burris and welcome to the forum. Does your 501 have 2 rivets showing or 3? Does the scale ( handle ) material have a wood-like grain?

I am pretty sure it had 2 rivets. I am embarrassed to say that I can't check now, because the knife is missing. The handle looked like wood, but it had a strange texture like it was either fake or had a strange finish. If you looked closely at the handle there was a small grid pattern. I was really confused about the age because the blade looked old.

...well Burris, it sounds like you may have a 501 with script lettering, maroon micarta ( Buckarta) scales and 2 exposed scale rivets. I'm thinking that this may put it at around 1978 to 1980. It would have 440C stainless for the blade. I have one of those and let me tell you...it DOES keep an amazing edge and it's rock solid. That's a nice knife Burris and I use mine as an EDC a lot. If you look on Ebay I'm sure you'll see a couple up there for bids to get an idea of the going prices ...there usually are a couple up there..

Thanks for your help. According to the Buck website 74-80 had a dot before and after the model number, and I think I would have noticed that. You are definitely right about holding an edge, it was very sharp.

burris charles,
You seem to be confusing the 110 info about dots with the 501 marking. Please do not make that leap!! I suggest you obtain Blade's Guide to Knives and study the Buck sections. If you have specific questions, many of the guys on this forum know the answers.
Respectfully,
Larry:)

...You're very welcome Burris...actually the Buck website is referring to the 110's and 112's and a few others of that time period. Some models like the 501 seemed to follow their own rules for identification marks for a while. The 501 had ONE dot to the right of 501 on a few of the 1984 to 1985 versions. There was no reason indicated for the single dot. That knife was Birchwood and the blade was 425M steel. It also was changed from script to block lettering that year. The name was changed from Esquire to Squire on that year as well. I think it was 1986 when Buck more or less "standardized" the date codes for their knives. There are so many variables in almost all of the Buck models that it's mind-boggling to say the least. That be said, you have a really nice knife there that can give you many more years of use. Think twice before selling it...it won't make you a rich man...LOL...

 ...oops...Didn't see ya post there Larry...Sorry...:o I type kinda slow...:o :o...where's the smilie for "foot in mouth" ???...
Burris, I could study the books and everything I could find but I'd still not know as much as Larry has forgotten about Buck knives...

Thanks so much to both of you. I was wondering if the stamp marks were model specific or not, so I made the mistake of assuming. I just hope I can find the knife now. Some change fell out of my pocket in a crowded auditorium two days ago and I haven't seen the knife since.

You may or may not be interested, but there is an international antique military show coming to Louisville Kentucky in Feb. I think the dates are 23-26. There will be 1600 tables there and the table space has been sold out for months.

Darryl,
Let me see.....short term memory is the first to go.....so, knowing what I do, I'd say that sight is the third thing to go.
