It's been a while since I posted here, and I must say I miss hanging around the Buck forums. Recently I have started a quest to replace my old 501 that went missing. I loved that knife for my EDC because it was slim, light and a nice looking knife.

Now to the question: Did the 501 ever come with SS bolsters like the 500 at any point? If so, what are the years the 501 had SS bolsters? What are the years the 501 used hard wood for the inlays?

Thanks,
John

I believe it was early part of the last decade that they changed to the NS bolsters, prior to that it was SS.

John, Welcome. The 501 came out in 1975 with a polished stainless steel frame, 440C blade and micarta slabs. Not much changed with it until in 78 Buck built the slabs to hide the pivot pin. In 1984 or just before the year date stamps the frame went to Nickel Silver and the blade stamp from old English to block style lettering. Then the year date blade came out. This was the first model of the 500 series and named Esquire at first. Later changed to Squire. DM

Thank you guys very much for the information. The 501 I have showes the pivot pin so I guess it was made between 75' and 78'. The back spring was getting weak and I had some good memories with that knife I thought I would retire it. I bought a new 501 from an online dealer (nobody sells them around here). well I was not too impressed with the new 501 and contacted the seller. They said I could send it back and have it replaced. I thought it might just be better to send it with my old 501 to Buck and have them look at them.

Now I am stuck with my little 503 until they get back. So far it has done anything I have asked of it, but it's just a touch too small.

Thank you both again for your help,

John

Hey John,
There's some good info on the 501 on the BCCI website as when and what changes happend. I just became a lifetime member and think that it will be well worthwhile.

Meant to say this earlier, but its probably not a weak spring as much as it is buildup and needing a cleaning and oiling.
