Picked up this little 501 with the cursive Buck lettering this past weekend. Shows wear but is nice and tight. Any idea on vintage?

Bike, Buck brought that model out in early 1975. The first one of the 500 series. They began to hide the middle pin in 1977. That's close info. for that model. A good find. DM

If that's your first 501, you're in for a treat. It's about the perfect size for comfortable pocket carry.

Nice lookin knife.

I like the looks of micarta better than the current rosewood Buck uses, unless it's well-darkened by age.

The Rosewood would be ok it had some figure, but the striped stuff just doesn't do it for me.

I'm good with my production Rosewood. The lock bar was a little high when closed but I guess it's ok for a production. Doesn't bother me much anymore because it's a solid lockup knife and carries great in the pocket. Sharp as heck too. Maybe check out the buck Custom shop and see what other handle options they have.

Here are two 501's I ordered last year from the custom shop. Both are S30v, one with walnut and one with oak scales. I wanted one for me and one to gift to my father. Decided the walnut looked the best so I kept the oak.

As far as overall fit and finish I found both knives to be very well done and had no complaints at all. For the money I think they are a real bargain

Both of them look superb. The 501 is just a great knife and I love the blade shape. I didn't know about the custom shop when I first bought my 501, but the way I ding up my knives I'm not sure I'm ready yet for a custom.
