I saw the threads where you all were noting the differences & changes in the 300 series, changes in manufacturers, etc, and was wondering about some 500 series differences. I just received my older 503 that I got for cheap, and was comparing it to my newer 2002 model. At first I thought the blade looked way short when looking from the top view, but now I see the difference. Maybe if someone has a newer and older one, you can make this comparison also, and confirm.

First off, is this micarta on the older one? From a distance, it looks like wood grain pattern, but up close, it has the woven linen look.

The exact measurements of the blades when open are a full 2- 1/4" on the older, and 2- 5/16" on the newer. I think these are advertised as 2 - 1/4 blade length. Seems the older one is a little less pointy, and of course more worn, but still there.

After looking closer, I noticed that the whole bolster at the pivot end is different on the older one. Shorter distance from point A to B, which makes the line from B to C at a completely different slope / angle. Seems that a slight difference in the geometry of the blade joint makes it look shorter when closed.

I just wondered if you guys noted these differences, and if they indicate any certain manufacturer or time period. I like replacing my newer Bucks with older ones. This one should polish up and sharpen up pretty well.

I don't know anything about the 503, but had to post to say you take great pictures!!:thumbup:

That is Micarta on the older 503.

Well thanks Stumps. I thought someone would chime in about the 500 series changes, but maybe not.

They changed the 501 bolsters so that the scale would be the same angle on ea end, it appears they did the same with the 503. the bolsters also changed from SS to Nickel Silver.
Don't know on the exact length but it doesn't take much sharpening to loose a sixteenth on the tip.

Buck announced a major construction change in their 81 catalog for this series. Then in 82 the steel was changed to 425M. So, I'm thinking thats when the frame steel type was changed and slabs from micarta to birch. Then is 85 the stamp went from script to block style and the year codes appeared a year later. DM
