I'm thinking about getting one or the other for my dad.

I was pet sitting at my parents house a short while back and I had to go down in the basement to get something. As I passed the desk where my dad sits sometimes when he's down there I noticed that my dad had a little knife sitting on the desk under the lamp. I opened it up and it was a POS Pakistan knife that looked practically ruined. I have no idea how he used it. I see him and my mom all the time and I never have seen this knife. I don't even know what he uses it for. Regardless I am going to replace it.

Does anyone here have a preference for either the Buck 503 or the Buck 55?

I know that the 55 is a half-sized 110 basically, and the 503 has a drop point as opposed to a clip point.

Do any of you have a picture comparing the two of them....or even a picture comparing either of them to maybe a 110 or a 112 or a SAK?

Thanks! :)

Hope this helps.
I really like the 55 (once I got it back from the wife LOL).
Don't have 503.

I carry a 503 occasionally. I prefer drop point blades for just about anything that I do. Other than blade preference, however, I'd go for the 55. It feels a little better in my hand for a small knife than the 503.

How about the 501. If I'm not mistaken, It's closer to the size of the 55. Anyone have an opinion?

Hi Bung,

In MHO they are about the same size. You hit the blade type dif and WTB hit the NK-vs-Brass. They are both very nice. Here is a pic of the two side by side. Also, the only thing about the 55 being 1/2 of a 110 is by math.....it's about 1/4 the size of a 110. Take a good look at goose's pic. The 55 and 503 are small gentlemen knives.....I like a bigger knife....one I can use to perform any task including protecting myself...these are ok for smaller work like cleaning your finger nails, opening mail or boxes ect.

I have the 501 but not the 503. For some reason I thought the 503 was bigger so I checked the catalog. I was wrong. AGAIN!!:D

Why not one of each? :D

You can check them out then decide :D Maybe keep one for yourself or buy another pair ;)

Good luck!

A 501 is a nice knife to have sitting on your desk. Good letter opener and apple peeler. The kind of knife you hope Grandpa leaves you.

Buckaholic, Thanks very much. That makes me want to get a 501 now. :) I'll see if I can post a picture of the POS knife soon too. The next time I'm over there I'll take a picture of it and get a better idea of what size it is. :) I should be over there tomorrow or Sunday.

Cool beans Bungwrench...
I like the 501 for the same reason that WillTheBBQ said...NS. Given a choice, I would always go nick over brass. Brass stinks.
One thing to consider is the type of blade your pop has know. Does he prefer clip or drop? Maybe he doesn't care...but you might want to think about that.

It is a clip point just like the Buck 55. I know that he doesn't care and I also hate how brass tarnishes so easily and it does stink. I will be going with the 501 or the 503 I've decided that much. I'm thinking the 501 may be just a touch larger than he may want. :)

why not take dad along and let him pick what he likes and you both will be pleased?

Because if I do that we will never get the knife. He will insist that he doesn't need it and will not want me to buy it.

He's tricky and tries to slip money back in my pocket and stuff. :)

:D

I have them both a 501 and 503. I carried a 501 from 12 until my mid 20's. It is in my pocket now in my late 30's.

I bought the 503 when I had to wear a suit on my job. It was and is the only time I thought a 501 was too big. It was wearing on my suit. I've never had a problem with any other clothing, shorts, jeans, caki's with the 501. But if you have a $400 suit on, you might want a 503.

If they made a 55 the size of a 501 I would buy one. The 503 and 55 will get most jobs done, but the 501 is a big small knife if that makes sense. It is very carryable.

But make no mistake, the 503 is a very good knife. I'll bet the 55 is too. I just like the larger size of the 501. It is very thin and carries well.
