I just picked up a Buck 505 with malachite on Ebay. The action is very stiff. Takes a lot of effort to open the blade, particularly the last bit of motion before the lock engages. I lubed it and cycled it several times. Do you think it will loosen over time? I figure through use it will loosen but I wanted to see if others have had a similiar experience with their buck pocketknife.

It sounds like it could be galling between the rocker and the blade. If it was not properly lubed by the previous owner the damage is already done. What is truly needed is to take the blade out and repolish the radius.

If that is not the case and it is just too tight it is fixable.

Our customer service department could take care of it.

CJ, thank you for your reply. The knife was brand new when I bought it. I think it's just stiff so I'll use it and see what happens.

I became interested in the Buck 505 after finding a Buck 506 with micarta when I was in college about four years ago. I carried the 506 for a long time and only recently put it away. I would like to own more configurations of this model. I've seen a bunch on Ebay. The Leopard one is real ugly. Any plans for a new insert for this classic?

Buck knives are great but I think the company should focus on classic designs. I owned a crosslock doubleblade and was not impressed. I also owned a Buck Odyssey and liked that until I bought a Benchmade. Maybe the Mayo will be a hit. Anyway, Buck is great and thanks for posting.

You might try using a solvent first to make sure there isnt any goo in the pivot areas of the knife. I would rinse it out thoroughly and then lube it. If it has the problem CJ mentioned, you will notice that the knife has a gritty action, which is from the to metals galling.
If cleaning it, or using it for a while does not loosen it up for you then I would definitely send it in, we will fix whatever it is.
The 506 and the 507 are nice little pocket knives, the hard part is finding one since they were both discontinued a while back.
Take care,
