Buck 5160 110, Clip Point or Drop Point, Tough Choices

I know....get both :-)

Been a while since I owned a Buck 110. Every time I bought a vintage one in nice shape I wound up selling it to a collector. So figured I might as well buy a new one just to be a user. Love the idea of the 5160 steel as I like a blade that forms a patina with use.

So hard to decide between a clip or drop point though. I like the look of the drop much more than the clip but the clip is a classic design. I know I will go with the black covers on this one though over the other options.

Anyone here have both and can share thoughts on which they liked better or if you only bought one, why you picked what you picked?

Thanks

I started with the clip point

Then I added the drop point

I guess I would pick the clip point because of the character it has with a patina

I went with the clip. Just looks better to me. I carry it every day in a pocket full of keys and coins. Looks beautiful.

IMO the drop point looks like a misshapen 110. I just can't get over how fugly that blade profile is on the 110 handle. It just doesn't "flow" to me. Plus the clip has the "custom" blade stamp and the drop doesn't, if it matters to you.

I went ahead an ordered the clip point, 5160 steel and black scales. Should be here tomorrow. I just think the clip is the more traditional look which matters to me and also I feel a small point will do more for me than the more rounded blunt of the drop point. I am not one to pry with a knife anyway so should be fine with the clip. I plan to use this like my large Sodbuster around the yard and garden and maybe a Kwik thumb stud would be of help with one hand opening.......humm, brass or steel...always decisions

Good on ya! Enjoy your new knife. I'm loving mine. With the studs, I match em to the bolsters. Gives a nice look.

Once that first scratch or drop happens, put some good mileage on that sucker and post a pic.

I think the clips look the nicest but I think a drop point would utilized the 5160 more as a tough steel. I love clip points for pure slicers and piercing but really only use it for hunting and I don't hunt like I used to.

Clip points look a lot nicer, IMO.

Got my Buck 110 in 5160 today and am very pleased. beautiful knife with the brass and black wood (ebony?). Nicely done blade grind, reasonably sharp, nice smooth pull and perfect centering. Tiny bit of side play but no lock rock. Love the rounded edges. All of my vintage Bucks had the square shoulders. Going to add a brass Kwik Stud for easier access for yard/garden stuff and a pouch sheath with pocket clip, again for easy on an off. Shiney today but it will go to work tomorrow (and every day after this).

Is that the same knife pictured from Saturday? Wow, Cool gray patina on the blade.
Yes, cut lemons and peaches and some smoked sausage a few times and let the blade sit a half hour each time before cleaning.

Got the drop point today. perfect centering again, way sharper than the clip point but really gummed up with black residue. WD40 bath and lots of working the blade has it with a smooth action now. The clip point was sharpened on a KME then stropped but the drop is sharp enough I may leave at is for a while until it needs resharpening.
