I have a Buck 525 scrimshaw pocket knife that I just acquired from a guy that got it from his grandfather that passed on. Scrimshaw features a Scooner, lighthouse, 2 wooden kegs and a harpoon leaned up against them with ocean scene and seagulls with the initials JL on it. He said he thought it was whale ivory which I would assume sperm whale tooth? Buck blade has Buck 525+ on it. Does anyone know if this is a factory run limited edition that buck did and had JL scrimshaw a numberd amount of pieces? Anyone knowing any additional information like like who is JL? And any other additional information would greatly be appreciated. I took some photos but do not see a place to post the pictures?

Howdy,
I'm going to move this over to the place where the folks who know all things Buck hang out: The Buck Forum...

Here is a knife similar to what you describe in my collection. The scales are plastic.
I'm sure this is an aftermarket enhancement and not done by Buck Inc. The 525 is a popular knife
used for aftermarket advertising and "gift shop" embellishments. I would wonder if real ivory would
be used on a knife like the 525 anyways. Other than fossil ivory, many bans were put in place in the
70's and 80's. Your knife dates 1991 (+). We would love to see a picture of yours if you can post it.

Thank you very much for the infomation. I do not see a option to post a photo? Is it because I am not a paid member I visit this site on a regular basis just have not been able to come up with the membership fee at this time. Your knife look alot like mine but the coloring on mine is a little yellower or creamier. Or it may be the lighting from the picture. I got my eye loop out and from what I researched on net I see a woodgrain lines and looking from the side cuts I can see cross these sections that look like they go 190 degrees which states like elephant ivory and 90 degree cross sections is mamoth ivory so I more to lien twoards it may be elephant because sperm whale has a type of circular pattern in it. Either elephant ivory or plastic so I am gonna try and test a spot off to the side and heat up a pin and see if it penetrates or not? That should tell that it is some type of bone. I do not know if I am allowed to post photos or email them to you or not. I dont see a option to add attachment to my post or reply. I understand that it is preban and you are suppose to have a COA with it. I will let you know how the hot needle test comes out. Its not much to work with but I am going to do the least damage as possible. If it is bone it will not do any damage. I would love to show a picture of it what do i need to do to post a photo??

I just found out that I can not post a image for now and understand. I also just did the heat test with a needle (scortching red hot) and it makes no penetration or leaves no mark whatsoever. I did it at least 5 times and applied pressure. That means it is not plastic. Its got to be Ivory?

I'll post the picture for you if you like. Check you messages. It would be neat if it were real ivory. Never heard of the needle test.

i had to change my settings to receive emails so check your messages and get back with me and ill send you the pictures

Found one for sale and it was in the listing. The hot needle test will melt Delrin but not Zytel.
