I'm not sure the dot is an actual date code.

I'm sure one or more of the experts on dating a Buck will chime in shortly. :)

I'm not familiar with the 526. What is the closed length? It looks like it may a pocketable lockback "Gentleman's" knife.

The dot on this model is associated with 1985. Buck seems to have used dots as engineering change codes, a way of identifying a change in the product as it proceeds thru the manufacturing steps. The dots have different meanings on different models and at different times in Bucks history. For example, the dot on 1966-67 fixed blades relates to a change in how the blade was blanked. 4 dot 110's signify the change to 425m steel. I can't find the reference off the top of my head but I believe the single dot on these small models possibly denoted the use of a "Swedish" steel for the blade. I suspect it would be important to know that type of information then it came to the heat treatment. Dots, while not actually date codes as afishhunter pointed out can still be useful for dating if you know the time period of the change they represented.

The 526 is the deluxe, polished, beveled edge version of the standard stainless 525 model. There are 12 different models of Buck's little drop point all sharing the same 1-7/8" blade and locking system. 425, 505, 506, 507, 515, 524, 525, 526, 527, 529, 825, 826. These can be a collecting addiction all to themselves. As one other member here once said about his collection, he believes they reproduce in the dark of the closet. I must have a couple hundred of the little buggers without even being anywhere having all and I know Haebbie goes after them also.

Talking about 826
This one was given to me as a gift by a fellow member Craig and it’s a beauty.

Because the blades are basically all the same they occasionally get mixed between the models. The 826 was a 100th year commemorative issue for the Statue of Liberty. It was given it's own unique model number but it's basically a 525 with acrylic overlays. You have a 525 with a coined overlay sporting a 826 blade. Stuff like that is what makes collecting the little ones so much fun.
