Buck 532 Giraffe Bone Question

Today I received a 532 with GB scales that was an internet special. The knife was made in 2008 and it is quite nice. There is a bit of side play when closed, but it is solid when locked open.

My question is about the sheath. It is a brown distressed leather made in Mexico. It is stamped 500 on the back and it is quite large and a totally different style than the sheaths I have on some older 532's.

I called Buck and reached service, but they close early on Fridays and the service rep said he would check and get back to me next week.

His initial response was that was the sheath being supplied with the 532's?

I was wondering if anyone else had bought a GB 532, and if so, what sheath came with it.

Thanks,
Peter

I plan to get on as soon as I find a seventy dollar bill:p. I figger those web specials are what the found diggin around closets and what not so they match em up with whatever will work.

I have two of the giraffe bone 532's and they both came with the sheath marked 500. It's my understanding that there are no more sheaths with 532 stamped on them. None of my newer 532's which are mostly limited editions came with a 532 stamped sheath.

That is pretty much the sitatuion. The 532 GB internet special was either a left over from somehting or a build out; extra handles, blades, inlays from various projects. And, I don't believe we have had 532 sheaths for some time.

One thing I noticed about the GB 532's is that the blades are just about 1/4" shorter than any of the others that I have. Wonder how that came about?

Thanks for the response Mr. Keys. Even though it is bad news. The invoice does say "Build Out".

The 500 sheath is not even close to a good fit for a 532. It would have been nice to know that a correct sheath was not supplied with the knife BEFORE ordering.:(

...peterinct...Here's a bit of information regarding 532 sheaths in general. Buck made no effort to deceive anyone on including a 500 sheath with the GB 532's.

The original very well made brown leather sheath was stitched all the way around the pouch and was clearly marked on the backside with the model number 532. In approximately late 1992, in a move to reduce cost, the sheath was replaced by a fold over type sheath that was sewn up one side. This sheath was sometimes marked just under the belt loop with the model numbers 532 and 551 under that. After the limited edition Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Bucklock of 1995 the model numbers were no longer stamped on the sheath. This sheath in brown or black leather was used until the Limited Edition 2000 knives with BG-42 blades that used a Duke 500 sheath in neutral color, although I have seen some with a black Duke sheath. One or the other of these Duke sheaths is used on all current Bucklocks issued with a sheath.

...No matter what sheath it's in or even if it has a sheath at all...the 532 is a great knife...

I'm curious to know what you mean by "not even close to a good fit". I just got mine out and the 500 sheath is a perfect fit for all the 532's I have except for two. Those two are the thick stag handled "Timberlake" and a LE with the impala horn handles. Those came with a pouch to fit them.

The fit for the standard thickness 532's couldn't be any better and is just as good as the ones marked 532.

Thanks for the info DarrylS....and I agree that the 532 is a great knife.

As to my statement about the 500 sheath being a poor fit, there is about .25" inch of free space in side to side movement and about half that in front to back movement when putting the knife into the pouch. The sheaths that I have for the bg-42 indigo blue, is black and sewed up one side, snug fit NO free space at all, as is the one I have for a plain 1993 532.

If the snap on the 500 sheath came undone for any reason, the CB 532 or any others I have would easily fall out.
