So some of you may have already seen my thread asking about these knives, but if not here is the scoop.
I was at the local Walmart buying some shotgun slugs, and after grabbing a couple boxes off the shelf, saw a couple older cardboard Buck boxes with orange clearance tags on em, so grabbed em to check out. Now I already had gotter a couple Kershaw Storms, and a couple Kershaw Alaskan Blade Traders at this same store months earlier when they were being cleared out, so I was excited to see what else they had now.
Turns out that the 2 little Buck boxes were for a couple Buck 55's, and they were priced at the final clearance price of $10!!
How can I pass that up when the original price on the boxes was $38, and another clearance price of $20 previously?
Anyhow, I came on here and was told they were good little knives so I went straight back and picked em up. Unfortunately they only had the 2 though. lol
Initial impressions are very good, and the fit and finish on them is very good aside from one sharp pin. They are very thin, and disappear in my pocket without issue. Any larger and I think it would be slightly uncomfortable, but this size is very nice. The wood is very nice, and the quality of the materials really comes through. The blade was not extremely sharp, but not the worst out of the box production knife I have had. My main concern was the 420 hc steel, but was told it is very serviceable with bucks heat treat. We shall see how that works out, as my go to steel is VG10 or S30v, so I don't expect this to be quite as good.
Anyways here is a couple picks.
So I have had one in my pocket for the last couple days and I really like it. Like I said previously the size is very nice and disappears in the pocket. My go to knife for work(shirt and tie) is a somewhat traditional Fallkniven U4(Would you guys call it traditional?), which is a little bit smaller, and for some reason that little bit of size makes people look at the 2 knives differently. For whatever reason this Buck comes across as a more aggressive or dangerous object, where people usually don't even blink when they see the U4. Needless to say this won't be replacing the Fallkniven, but outside of work, if I ever find myself in need of something more discreet without a pocket clip this will be my go to.
I really haven't put it through enough use to judge the steel yet, but I hope that it holds up alright. I don't imagine I will have an issue as it's small size really does limit it's tasks in the first place.
There is one complaint I do have with the knife, and that is that on one side of the lock pivot pin, the pin itself is not rounded off, and made smooth all around. It kind of has a sharp edge on a small part of the pin, but this was easily fixed with a little file. Tricky to do without touching the wood scales, but it only took a second to fix.
The lock is also really stiff, but I appreciate that and expect it to loosen up a bit. It does lock up solid as a rock, and feels like it can handle alot more than it's size would imply.
Overall I am very impressed for the $10 I paid. Would I pay $40 for it though? I am not sure. Traditional folders are not really my thing, but who knows. That may change.
