Just purchased a Buck 55. Awesome little knife. Was wondering if the date on the sticker (which was placed on the actual box containing the knife) is the date of manufacture. Also, has the Custom Shop ever offered the 55 as a custom build? Thanks in advance.

Look to the tang stamp for date identification. Find the symbol, then reference the guide below to find your year:

Not sure about the custom shop, the more knowledgeable Buck guys may chime in on that one. I do not think they've ever offered a custom shop version, though. If they do/did, I'd definitely pick one up.

Awesome little knife! Congrats on the acquisition! Use her up, she'll always be good to you. :)

No the 55 has never been one of the Custom shop build to your own choice knives. However, there are plenty of Limited Edition and Special Order knives the have been made and can be found for sale on the open market.

Here is one Special Order knife that the BCCI had made for sale to club members (the photo is the 55 & 111 BCCI Club Knives).

I have two 55's and I carry one once in a while. Especially, when a clip Vantage doesn't seem right. I carry one in a leather slip that hangs from my belt and lays in my pocket, flat above the bottom along the seam. Almost invisible, I can get it out one handed if I want to, but I don't plan to get in a knife fight with anything but my 119. (or at all) I tried dyeing the bone one orange, on a whim, with RIT dye and it came out just yellow color. I actually should have left it alone. I was successful in dyeing the beige scaled large Vantage to a nice Hunter Orange that was visible if dropped in the weeds. All the actions above, were posted and can be found in a Buck Forum search if the photos are still there.........As mentioned, special scaled version can be found aftermarket. 300

Thanks for all the respones. I used the code guide as suggested and it discovered my 55 was made in 2017. I had to pull out a magnifying glass just to see the code, it was so dang small, LOL! I do hope Buck considers offering the 55 as an option in their Custom Shop. The above special order model from BCCI is gorgeous. I'm sure it costed a pretty penny. Like this knife a LOT, will probably pick up another....along with a 112 eventually. Already own the Cabela's and Bass Pro s30v 110's.

Actually, that yellow looks pretty good. I like it. However, if you want orange for that one, just get some red RIT. Maybe a better idea would be to mask off some of the scales, get some brown and black RIT, and make Autumn Gold scales (leaving the yellow showing through).
