I am thinking about getting a Buck 55. I have never held one in my hand, so I do not have a feel for the size. How does the size compare to the 112, 501,or any of the slim line 500's. Does the 55 come with NS bolsters? I would just stick with the 501, but I am wanting to get the 55 b/c of the blade shape.

Does anyone carry a 55 and use it often? How do you like it compared to other Buck knives?

Thanks,
John

Hi John! The Model 55 is a great knife. It is about one/half the size of the 110; hence the name 55. I have seen a few limited editions with NS bolsters, but the regular issue has brass. If you like the 110 and 112, but want something that fits the pocket better, you most likely will be pleased with it.

I guess the 55 has the half size of the 111 and looks similar - or not?

Hi John,

Like Richard said....it's about the size of a 503. In other words it's small....about 1/3 the size of a 110 or 111. If you like a very small pocket knife you should get one it's a mini-me of the classic 110. I have not seen one with NK frame....but it could be out there.

Hummmm I don't like to answer back, but the 55 is the li'l child of the 111, not of the 110  ;) :)

Thanks guys for all the help and the pic. I think I am going to pass on the 55 as the 503 is cutting it a little close for being too small.

I want something that is the size of the 112, but thinner. Has anyone ever heard of someone thinning their 110 or 112?

Thanks,
John

The 501 is bigger than both the 503 and the 55, it might be just what you are looking for. A year or so age there was a thread about someone thinning down a 112. I think he used a belt sander. It is something that I would like to see from the factory. Maybe a 55XL or a 73.33 2/3 of a 110.

Haebbie, The Buck website puts paternity squarely on the shoulders of the 110, not the 111. But your photos do indicate the contrary!!! I think a DNA test may be in order.

John, it is not necessary to thin the 110/112. Take the 500 or the 501 they have nearly the same size but are not so "fat". Also: if you find one of them: you may have a look to 532 or 531 (the 531 is somewhat larger). Nice knives, but both are not so easy to find.

Thanks for the advise. I have a 500 and love it, but I want something with a clip point. The 500 with a clip point would be great ;);). I love the fact that the 500 bolsters are SS, the shine does not seem to tarnish like the 501 or 503. I have a Buck 112 that is a 2 dot that I would love to thin down. Maybe that will be my next project. Speaking of project, I am alomst finish replacing the scales on my 301. I will get some pics of it and start another thread.

Thanks,
John
