Hi, I'm new as well. And like most newbie's I have a question for the more knowledgable. I have a Buck 550 and 551 in brand new condition. After reading a couple of short threads here, I've learned they were produced from '90 to '96 and in smaller numbers. I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of steel was used and what kind of wooden inlays? They seem like really nice and solid slim line knives. I have a sheath for the 551 but not for the 550. I thing the 500 sheath would fit. Any specific info would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Buck Forum. You have the King Charles I and II. The frame sizes are the same as the 500 Duke and 501 Squire. The wood species, like most all laminated wood Buck knives will be Birch. Someone else will need to chime in on the steel, it sticks in my mind that the change from 425m to 420HC is about 1992, a time period this model seems to straddle.

Thank you, I've enjoyed reading some of the threads here! My 550 and 551 were in fact made in 1992 due to the "-" stamp mark. Thanks for the inlay information. Hopefully someone knows the blade type! Thank you again
