hi i had bought a buck 639- from the px while in germany 1987, it went with me to the gulf war and was a last defense weapon on my person if needed.
i bought another one on e bay last week a 639> i noticed that the serrated edge near the tip was factory ground on the opposite side as the 639-. does anyone know of this change, why, and is there a collectors preference.
Thanks Brian

Hello cia and welcome! If I am reading your message right, the first 639 has a - mark after the model number? If so, thats the date code for 1992. The knife with the > mark was made in 1987.
The most likely reason that the serrated edge is diferent is that the shop/engineers at Buck made a change for some now unknown reason. Changes like this are usually made as a result of suggestions from our customers, or process improvements in the shop.
I hope this helps.

I checked my own 639>; the tip serrations are ground on the same side as the stamping.
