Hi folks,

I recently acquired a Buck Nighthawk 650 - my first Buck ever by the way. It came with a black box which is labeled "Buck Knives, 650, Cat. 2206". The knife itself has a - most likely - phosphated 6 1/4 blade and the sticky handle is all over black (definitely no green in it). The embossing on the blade says "Buck, 650, U.S.A., PAT PEND".
I'm pretty sure this knife is real and not an imitation.

I've already searched the web but unfortunately couldn't find any information on this specific model. So hopefully there is anybody out there who can tell me something about it (for example steel = 420HC ?). I heard about Nighthawks with black handles and a satined blade but I couldn't find the combination I described above. So thank you guys in advance.

Cheers,
J5

If memory serves me correct, the bead blasted or satin blades where the first version, then the black blades where introduced. What is after the 650 on the blade? I have two different markes on my bead blasted blades, one is a C mark, and the other is a reversed C mark. This information will help in determining what year it was made. HL

I'm not at home right now but i'm almost certain that there is no C or anything else after 650 except for USA and Pat Pend.

This would have been on the same line as the 650.
Mine is
BUCK
650C
U.S.A.
Patent Pend.

The black blade/black handle is the first generation Nighthawk. This was the standard configuaration until Buck changed to the black blade and green/black handle. There have also been some combinations of satin blades with black and black/green handles. I believe all the regular production Nighthawk knives were 420HC.

jfive look at ItsToEarly post got lucky at swap meet sunday 455 and 650 thread, you will see the mark after the 650 in his last picture. HL

My satin finish 650 came in a black box with 0650-BB-0 so it is bead blasted. All black handle and 650\ (1994).

i just made a picture of the embossing.

i think it's obvious that there is neither a C nor a reversed C. At first I thought it was a scratch but now it seems like a backslash to me...any ideas?

According to the Buck catalogs, they show the black one in 1994 with 425 steal. They show both in the 1995 catalog, again both with 425 steal. Sounds like they started making the bead blasted blades in 1994, by edbeaus example. It would be interesting to see if any one has a 1993 year date 650. Its nice to see that in 1994, and 1995 that they where made out of 425 steal. The 1996 catalog does not say what type of steal they used for them. HL
