Came accross a 2005 691. Didn't buy it because I normally skip the gut hook versions as "ugly" to my taste. The only reason I think I might possibly buy it is because it's an Idaho but before I write it off completely I would like to know what was "special" about it. The box label is B691-SP8-0. I could find 691-SP9 in the Special Projects list but not SP8. This knife looks entirely stock normal to me with nothing to note other than it's an Idaho. 691-SP9 was listed as BG42. I saw no special steel markings on this knife. Can anyone tell me what was "special" about this "SP8" knife?

It's in the March, 2004 newsletter SP list. It doesn't have much of a description, just "Buck Zipper for Bass Pro", 5000 made for American Rod & Gun. Model/label number is the same as the one you're asking about.

I've found that in a lot of cases there really isn't anything "special" about a "special projects" knife. They are sometimes just one that's been brought out or brought back at the request of the buyer.

Sixth line down. The scan of the 2004 newsletter on the BCCI site is a bit fuzzy, but it's readable.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the Special Projects Lists on the BCCI website. I knew the information was also duplicated in the News Letters. From now on I'll be sure to look in both places as I see now that the information may not always be the same. Interesting, any other order I've ever seen for Bass Pro whould have had "BP" in the second designator, not "SP"

I looked up American Rod & Gun. It is the wholesale distributor division of Bass Pro Shops.

This one I believe to be the SP9. I didn't get the box with it so I can't be positive. There's just not enough info in the SP list to positively identify it, but it does have the BG-42 blade as described.
