buck 692 drop point:

Steve,

Welcome to the forums. I don't know the history on the 692, but if you run a search for either 692 or Vanguard you will find a little more information on that knife. The guys from Buck are really busy right now with their move to Idaho so it may take a little while for one of them to get back to you.

Tom

I just purchased a Vanguard 192. I like the knife, and I've ordered a sheath that's a little more sturdy. I would like to know the history of this Buck knife, when it was designed, improvements, construction (what's a rat tail tang), how close to R. Lovelace drop point?

Hey steve in chesire im from manchester !
Are tou on the english forums british blades bush craft ?

Sorry so late.? The 192 was brought out in late 92 or 93 (I'm missing a catalog) with a 4 1/8" blade. Offered with a rubber or wood handel and brass guard and pommel. It has a hidden tang, which resembles the end of a rat tail file. Hence, some use that wording. The end has a hole drilled and the pommel and handle is held on via a pin thru this hole. It was originally offered with 420HC blade steel. The profile may resemble a Loveless but Bob's knife point normally did not drop as far down and his will express a more belly forward look. Whereas this model is point forward- belly back. Just some variation. The 192 has been offered in several handle materials over the years. DM

I am a fan of the rubber handle Vanguard they make an excellent bait knife when i'm shark fishing. I love this one too :)

A handsome 192 for sure. I was just putting my head together with another collector on this model and we know Buck offered it with many upgrade handle materials but not certain on steels as well. Yours has the nicer sheath too. DM

i have a few 192's and with the wood the colors vary some.
