I recently acquired a 703 Buck that has me puzzled; first of all please understand I am a user not a collector so my ignorance greatly overshadows my knowledge of Buck knives. I own several of the 700 series and the clip point blade (main blade) is the same on all of them so I was surprised when I received a new one and it wasn't the same. The knife in question is a 1998 model (mint condition and possibly unused) and a safety award presentation from a construction company in Florida. The clip point blade is slightly larger than my other 703's and the nail nic is horizontal across the top of the blade not on an angle down near the end as I am used to. The Buck shield is upside down as well ( upside down in relation to my other 700 series knives). Are these differences normal when manufacturing thousands of pieces or would a customer, the construction company on this case, have the right to dictate certain changes if the order was large enough, or is it ??????? Thank you.

That is exactly what it looks like, thank you! Was it only for 1998 that the change was made? Thank you
1998-99 catalogs show this nail notch and shield configuration. In 2000 and 2001 the shield was eliminated from all 700 series knives. The 703 was only available in 2002 for special orders, and then discontinued.

I suppose it is impossible to discern the reasoning behind altering just one model for only 2 yrs but it is very interesting. Thank you again

Dang. I have the changed nick position with no shield. Didn't realize there was one with a shield. Now I have another version to look for.
