Haven't seen much about the 760 AKA the Summit but I'm thinking about getting one and I figured since my Forum Search didn't come up with much this would be the place to ask.

It looks like a slick little design and I really like the idea of the thumb studs on the tools. But I'm really nore sure about it so I figured I'd see if I could find someone else to be my guinea pig :)

#1. Has anyone else had one?

#2. I'm interested in this piece for the fact it has a one handed opening blade and screwdriver. I understand the blade locks; do the other tools lock as well?

#3. Just exactly what is the handle material? It says aluminum but aluminum is only transparent in Star Trek movies :p Edit: Okay Buck website says its plastic and aluminum... makes sense. Can anyone tell me if the finish on the handle wears off like the finish on say a Maglite?

#4. Is it only in CE? I guess I could live with it being CE since 420 isn't hard to resharpen, and I don't have too many serrated blades so maybe it's time I got one more. But still CE is the bane of the knife world.

#5. Too big to carry in the pocket or no? About how thick is it? I didn't see a clip on it did I? :p That's okay I don't really care if it has one or not.

#6. I don't mean to be too picky but after seeing some of the liner locks on a batch of Buck Alpha Hunters (with the rubber handles) in a Walmart clearance bin I have to ask: I assume this knife is a liner lock, but is it a quality liner lock? I went through 6-8 of the folding Alpha Hunters and found all of them had thin liners that went all the way to the right :( I took one in my hands out of the box and found the blade had lots of play and with just my hands I could overcome the lock (but not completely). Plus at $44 each that's not much of a "clearance" so I passed it up. It kind of made me sad because I know Buck can make a good liner lock. I really hope those were duds.

#7. Does anyone know if it's a U.S. made model or an import? Just curious here really.

Thanks in advance!

DMW,

I don't know much about the Summit, but I can speak to the liner issues you mention on Folding Alpha Hunters.

Yes, the liners appear to be thin as compared to other production folders, and many times they engage right of center, even when the knife is brand new. However, there are copper-colored spacers located on each side of the blade that prevent the liner from moving all the way right. Even when you try to force it right, there still appears to be a pretty good contact surface.

After overcoming some early skepticism, I have used my Alpha Hunter for some pretty rough chores over the past six months. It's a tough knife. If you like it, you may want to consider buying it and giving it a try.

Thanks for the info Alex but I could overcome the lock with my bare hands! That does not work for me :( Like I said I hope that was just a dud.

yep

The blade, can opener/bottle opener and screwdriver have liner locks. The corkscrew is just a friction opening.

The handle is 6061 alumium over plastic. Can say for sure exactly what kind of plastic. The finish is anodized just like a mag lite so you can expect a similar wear.

It comes in 420 HC with a serrated blade.

I think it is ok for pocket carry. It does not have a clip. It is designed to be attached to a caribiner and carried that way.

It is a linerlock of similar thickness to the Alphas. You shouldnt have a problem with it, but if you do Buck has excellent customer service and a lifetime warranty.

It is an import from Taiwan.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks wabbit that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for... I think I'll pick one up sometime but I'll take my sweet time and find an exceptional deal on it.

FYI, the Alphas are just plain wrong and never should have gotten out. We did a quick review of existing stock, and this is not a normal issue, and definitely does not meet any criteria we have. The Alpha liner is extremely strong when we tested it under load.

The Summits come through my department, and are held to the same standards as our in-house product.

I'm glad to hear that. One of the drawbacks to being known for craftsmanship is that it's human nature for someone like me to come down on you too hard when something goes wrong.

It's kind of like giving a dog a new bone every day for a week and then stopping. The dog just kind of looks at you funny and drools the first day you don't give him a new bone.
