Hello y'all, I am thinking about getting a marksman & i have some credit due to me at a certain web retailer so i see they had a buck sale event but when I saw the marksman I noticed it was being listed as a BUCK 7788 Marksman & not a 830. All the specs appear to be the same but the number they are referencing. Are there different versions of this knife I am not aware of ? I am hoping that a few of you that are more knowledgeable in the ways of BUCK and their numbers can chime in and help me out. MUCH THANKS in advance.

Buck uses an item number and a catalog number. 830 is the item number while 7788 is the catalog number. It is the same knife. Great knife in my opinion.

Thanks MUCH Brother, I really appreciate the help. I have been wanting this knife since they first came out and they are selling for $78.00 and I have a $75.00 credit due to me so I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it.

I love that knife its really heavy duty. You need to get used to the lock. I closed and openeded it several hudreds of times, but today when I stabbed wood the lock didnt engage full and I cut myseld really bad I almost needed stitches.

The Marksman 830, one of Buck's best kept secrets, has been my EDC (along with the 424 Bucklite shown on top), for 2014. It is a brilliant folder fit for a king. Lite, safe, quick one-hander, super steel blade, inexpensive to own, easy to maintain, reliable performance.

It accompanied me to the NWKC annual meet in Kelso, WA. yesterday. One of the terrific vendors there was amazed by it and was shocked that it was made by Buck. He thought that it was assisted opening/automatic at first blush. He narrowly missed the 25th BCCI gathering and is enthusiastic to visit the factory in Post Falls, ID and wants to join BCCI so I gave him contact information. He had a terrific combo 120 with sheath and black Micarta 106 with sheath on his table btw. I was there to see The Ghosts Geo. Schrade collection but he didn't show so no joy. Unfortunately I was unable to get any contact information for him. He usually had six tables with four of them for his collection display and two for vending. Anyone know how to reach him please email me by clicking on my name, THX.

sch3ric, I enjoy stabbing wood with a long spear, axe and knife, all three of which I throw keeping my hand out of harm's way upon impact. I've broken spears (blade) and axes (wooden handle) but not the heavy throwing knives plus I've never cut myself despite the great violence and harm that I've caused to wood (4x8 ft sheets of plywood, stumps, unwanted tree and such targets). If you haven't experienced the joy of a viciously thrown spear landing with great impact and deep penetration into solid wood I recommend you consider it. What fun.

The Marksman is a mixed bag of a knife literally.Slick opening that's for sure but it requires two hands to close the blade safely.I've got issues with the strap lock.Taking it out of my pocket the grooves on the side of the strap lock grab my pocket.Handling the knife in any other way you just can't because the strap lock is in the way so you're limited in ergonomics. The knife has a good selling point and it's nice but it doesn't take long to figure what you might find to be the crutch is Hawk's strap lock as a design and in function.

I love mine! Belt carried it in a nylon Alpha Hunter sheath for months, untill the snap broke off recently :(

The clip was a little snug/tight on mine, so I removed it and clamped the mounting end in my vise.
Then bent it the long party ever so slightly to open it up a tiny bit.
Now it is perfect for not snagging the pocket.
Also added a small lanyard to make it super easy to get off the pocket :)
Just slip the lanyard right onto the clip. Stays there perfectly, but quickly removable too.
So lately I have been pocket clipping it.

I prefer to clip it to a right side cargo pocket :) Either the Marksman or my Vantage will be found there depending on which one I choose for the day.

Oh... one handed operation is quite easy, even with the strap lock.... just takes a little practice.

Great choices Desert Chris. My EDC is either the Marksman or a Paperstone Vantage. I like you have no problem opening and closing the Marksman one handed. The Marksman is a great knife!
