Hey Nim145...
Knice knife.
I have had my 889SBMF for about two weeks now I guess.
Your lock looks as though it engages fully, especially when compared to mine.
To date, I have not had any problems...though I was concerned at first inspection of the knife.

It's a few pics of various Forum member's 889 liner locks.
Mine is the one on the red background...you can see that the liner does not engage as full as yours.
Don't know if it is a defect as you asked, but mine also displays the wear in the same place as your's as the lock hits the blade tang.

The two links below are recent threads where the 889 came up. Hope the links work...if they don't, use the Forum SEARCH tool and enter "889".

It is a great knife and I think I'll be using it more than I thought as an EDC.

Well I guess I dont need to post any pics LOL
Thanks Goose!
I love all of mine!! I will probably pick up another one or two down the road.
None of mine appear to have the "bevel" you show, but if it locks up tight I dont know why there would be a problem??
I love all of them I have!

Is the bevel on the liner-lock, or the blade? From your pcitures it looks like it's on the blade?

Mine have that bevel, though not quite as large. A sharp edge there would tend to scrape or abrade the liner face on every opening, so it is a good thing I think to reduce wear. A radius in that location would be even better. As long as it locks up OK, I think it's alright.

My 889 OD is brand new. The bevel is on the blade. It is not on the liner lock.

Thanks for all the urls to the pics. Now I see that many others have 889s with a bevel on the blade where the liner lock rest.

What is the purpose of the bevel?

Blue Sky's idea sounds right, a full squared edge there "might" tend to catch the liner-lock and cause it to hang up instead of moving over under the blade.

Do the 882 and 887 have the bevel like the 889?

I can't speak for the 887 but on my 882, instead of having just a bevel on the outer edge. The entire end of the blade is ground at an angle that appears to coincide with the path that the liner lock follows as it swings into place.

The lock up is rock solid.

Here's a quick picture of what I mean.

Is the entire end of the 889 blade suppose to be ground at an angle? Is the bevel a defect or intentional?

The short answer. No, the bevel is not a defect it's intentional.

The answer with more elaboration (i.e. BS)
IMHO, in order for the liner lock to properly engage and lock. There has to be a bevel or angle to allow for the arced path that the end of the lock leaf spring takes as it moves from the outboard (stowed) to the inboard (engaged) positions. Without a ramp to create a wedge effect between the lock and the end of the blade there would be some vertical play in the blade when in the locked position.

Again this is all just IMHO

Thanks MikeSEA.

Does Buck have an email so that I can email them pics and get their say on this matter?
