Buck --a reasonable alternative to Sebenza

Yes, I too, like many before me have been bitten by the knife bug. I've lusted after the high end knives and have acquired my fair share. I researched the auora of the Sebenza by Chris Reeves and saved my pesos and bought both a small and a large sebenza. By credit to its critics, the sebenza is still a finely produced knife. It has its own characteristics--one of which is the use of the BG-42 steel. I recently sold both my sebenzas.

I turned to Buck--yep, that's right a Buck. But not an ordinary Buck. I've acquired the 501, 532, & 110 all in BG-42. With the steels being equal, I find Buck is paying attention to the public and now offers the Buck Edge 2000. Fit and finish on these particular models are very good.

Someone once said that Cadillac will get you to the grocery store in equal comfort as a Lincoln. So it is with me. I've experienced the Sebenza craze (quality is well founded), however, I found that I got more value for my dollar from Buck especially in the BG-42 steel. This post is not intended to flame anyone. I do not detract or slam the sebenza quality and following, all I am saying is that for you guys that find it difficult to justify the prices of the sebenzas (new or used), you might want to look very hard at the Bucks in BG-42. Nope there's no integral lock and no titanium slab, but there is a lock back that's worthy and time tested, with a variety of slabs and configurations through the custom shop. True there is no thumb stud and no clip. But, that's why there are horse races, everyone has a special preference.

Enjoyed both the Sebenzas and my new Bucks.

I too have a Master Series Buck Hunter #110. Yeapers, that BG-42 steel cuts like there is no tomorrow! Well made knife, but true, the Sebenza is a whole different animal.

Don't forget to check out SOG's new AutoClip knives, they have BG-42 steel blades too and are even less expensive than the BUCK knives with the BG-42 blades. + the SOG AutoClip has a pocket clip too!

I have to agree with Mark that the differences far outweigh any similarities. While the Buck may offer BG-42 and shares a reputation for toughness with the Sebenza, this toughness also comes with penalties such as a weight, ease of carry and 2 handed opening & closing (I know, it can be done). Also one is of a 30 yr. old design with updated materials (a good thing at times) while the other is a much more modern design using modern materials. Apples to oranges IMHO.

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

I just ordered a Buck 110 with a BG-42 Blade. First time with this metal, I usually stick to carbon steels.

The price is quite reasonable although you have to wait 2 to 3 weeks for delivery.

Wait, wait, wait,

what's that old saying, now I remember

"Good things come to those who wait"

There is no man worth a leke,
Be he sturdy, be he meke,
But he bear a basilard.

I read ya TANGUS!

Sebenzas are not the only ones out there that do the job. But there's no way in hell I'm selling my Sebbies. Might be getting new Bucks though even if my wallet disagrees.

Coming sometime (I hope soon) is the new Schrade Lake and Walker folder. I saw it at the SHOT show and fell in love with it (and ordered a bunch.) It features BG-42 steel so there's another good possibility for this steel from a major knife manufacturer. I think we'll be seeing more and more use of BG42 from more and more manufacturers. Don't forget, though. There is more to a knife than the steel from which it's made. Take care.

Tangus my friend, only you could start this thread and not get flamed to death. The Sebenzanistas must all be sleeping.

BTW, I kind of agree.
