I just obtained a copy of a January 1948 "Outdoor Life" magazine. On page 88 is an ad for Buck knives. H.H. Buck is pictured while quoting,"I make them by hand for real sportsmen. Lifetime knives cut anything". Featured in the ad are the 105 ($5.00), the 104 ($6.00), and the 111 ($7.00). Mr. Hoyt also states,"My knife is a beauty for looks, too, with hand carved lucite handle (choice of green, black, blue or red) and a rugged saddle leather sheath". Also featured is a coupon, "Clip this ad and mail with your check or money order to - BUCK Lifetime Knife - H.H. Buck and Son - 1272 Morena Blvd., San Diego, California.
I would imagine that some of you might have a picture(s) showing these knives. I don't own one, just the ad!!

Well, I have May 1948 from Outdoor Life, if that interests anybody.

He must have downsized the ad a bit since January, since this only shows one knife.

OK...Sirus question here.
Has anyone here actually cut a bolt with a Buck?
What were the results?
Messy????

LOL... why does my name pop up in the conversation here? And to answer your question, no :p

Cool ad by the way. I wonder how the $7 price compares to other knives of the day?

Looks like they were about twice the cost of Marble's.

This is from the April 1948 Outdoor Life.

Also, I hadn't noticed this before, but it looks like the 105 had gone up by $2 between January and May 1948 (at least, according to the info given by the initial poster).

And.....Now I also notice that the Buck skinning knife is in the fine print of the ad for NINE dollars.

Pretty gutsy pricing and apparently it worked.

Thanks Rocinante.

Guess that explains why my Dad used his hard earned egg money to buy a Marbles back in the day. After spending $50 on a new Winchester M94 he didn't have much left. :)

He still has both the rifle and the knife but no longer uses either one. His current deer rifle is a fancy schmancy stainless/synthetic Win Mod 70 in 270 WSM and the knife was replaced with a $2 Schrade factory reject and. Maybe $2 was all he could afford after dumping $800 on the new rifle and scope... LOL

At least he had the good sense to buy me a 110 for my first real knife :D

You're welcome.

Your dad must be gettin' close to 80 if he was buying Winchesters in 1948!!! Nice that he's still interested in fancy shmancy rifles and hunting deer.

Fancy rifle was probably a good investment.....I think they totally quit making the Model 70 recently.

He's closer to 70. He got that rifle when he was 12 or 13 (about 1950 I guess). Funny thing is he picked it up from the hardware store after school one day and brought it home on the school bus. Times have sure changed!

He has been a total gun nut and Winchester fan his whole life. Unfortunately the factory making the Mods 70 and 94 closed last year and it is rumored that any future production will move to Japan or Russia. :(

Yes, times have changed. The ads in those old mags are fascinating. You could get a mail order Luger for $39.95. Send your money, they would mail it to your home. No problem.
