I don't have any experience with the Buck 110's and 112's that have been reworked with a button on the side to open them. I saw my first one this weekend and it was a 112. I almost bought it but it had a couple of issues I wasn't sure about. Whoever did it did a nice job on the finish but it would not open manually and you had to press the blade hard to close it the last 1/2 inch. Is this normal on those knives or was something wrong with this one?

They get discussed here from time to time. All seems to depend on who did the mod and how well it was done.

Of course, no warranty with Buck if something goes wrong with it.

I haven't handled one so can't help more than that. I think it's a real "buyer beware" deal.

I have a 110 auto and it's a beautiful knife. Rosewood handles and beautiful filework. It's what I believe is called a "single action" and will only open by pushing the button. I believe that there are "double action" models that you can open normally. Mine takes some extra "push" to close the blade, but I believe it has to be that way in order to "load" the opening spring. I'd suspect that they are all that way to an extent.

I've only handled mine, so anything I say about them is just from handling the one.

If I recall correctly, the two can be differentiated by the double actions having a small detent in the tang area of the blade while the single actions have a small notch cut into the tang (or is the other way around). Also, if they are only for show rather than actual use, I am of the understanding that they should be stored in the open positon to take the tension off of the spring while closed.

I've been told on another forum that "dual" action means that you can push the button in to close the knife. Mine must be a single action because the button won't unlock the blade, I have to use the standard lock.

Of course, I have no direct knowledge of these items, but I was sitting in my favorite bar one night listening to my friend's wife's maid-of-honor's plumber talking about his brother-in-law's second cousins' best friends' ex-wife's auto mechanic who owned a couple of these... :p

A double-action is able to be opened manually with your fingernail, and also by the push of a button...a single action only opens with the button...the double action has the notch in the tang; single action had a blind hole in the tang...

If it has an oblong button it is probably a double action; if it is round, probably single action...

And a side-opener is like a Buck 110; the blade opens out the side...where some automatics open out the guard and retract the same way...

Definitely store any auto with the tension off the spring...This is a good idea for all knives...

A good quality double action Buck 110 runs about $135 on BB, TKA, or BA...

I could probably find an old pic that my friend's wife's maid-of-honor's plumber talking about his brother-in-law's second cousins' best friends' ex-wife's auto mechanic passed around...if needed...

This must have been a single action also. It would only open by pushing the button and needed that extra push to close it. Thanks

Hey,,,, no one told me I was suppose to store these things open!!!

Yeah,,,this is a single action.

Add about $40 to your guesstimate of value Trax..... jmho.. Well maybe for NS and FG and this HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE VINTAGE RARE IDAHO.....:D

Trax and Pack, but doesn't yours have the notch in the tang, which according to Trax's earlier post, should make it a double action??

Here's one that is a single action (must use button to open).

It may depend on who made it as to whether it is a hole, semi notch, or a full notch.

The red and green are doubles, (oval). The two buttons are singles. Maybe this will show the notch.

I have no idea who made these.
