I have the AG rubber handled vanguard, its a great knife, but i would love to see some jimping on the spine near the handle for better control duriong slippery feild dressing chores,as well as skinning,I like to choke up om my knife when removing backstraps, and this knife works pretty good for all of these jobs, but with a bit of jimping on the back of the spine,it would be AWESOME!How about it,would anyone else like to see some jimping grooves on any of the other models Buck makes?

That would void the warranty, otherwise i'd take it to the guy who makes my handmade knives and have him add some.LOL

I don't know why Buck doesn't build them that way in the first place.

Wouldn't cost much.

It makes sense, many of my hunting knives have the extra jimping to help control the knife, and its works great, hey why not.LOL

AG=Alaskan Guide. They are a line of knives including the Vanguard that are produced for Cabela's by Buck and have S30V blades. The blades are coated with a titanium aluminum nitride coating, and have a gold AG emblem on them.

You have hogs in Alabama. That steel will hold up much better when dressing them. DM

thanks, so just as durable as 420 yet will hold an edge longer? seems worth the extra money then

That depends on whose opinion you go by, but from what I hear and read a large majority opinion is yes to both questions.

If memory serves, Buck tests claimed that S30V was 48% better than 420HC at holding an edge.

We always take proprietary tests with a grain of salt.......and this test was only one type of cutting, not all-around use.

Some have claimed that S30V has a greater propensity for chipping in rough use and there appears to be at least some truth to that, BUT......I've watched this carefully and seen only a FEW such reports about Buck's S30V.......perhaps due to the Bos heat treat or other Buck magic.

So........you pays yer money and you makes yer choice.

It's your money and only you can be the judge.

:)

I began shifting to S30V a number of years ago. We have a lot of deer that go into the freezer every year and the S30V edge gets me through 5 +-, where 420 lasted 3 +- .

We tracked that ever since The AG Cabelas 110 hit the market. Pretty consistent results.
No edge chipping that we have seen.

Pass on the jimping. It's like a guthook in my view: sounds good, but not necessary. If your hands are so gunky they can no longer control your knife, stop and clean them. Really, it's not so hard to keep the knife hand clean. YMMV

S30V has been good to me, be warned though it is somewhat harder to sharpen.

I would have to disagree, jimping is an important addition to a good hunting knife, doesn't matter if your hands or clean or not, jimping also is used for a reference point,a good place to put your thumb while skinning at least.I haven't noticed s30v to be any harder to sharpen than any regular production steel.

I'm still trying to figure out his analogy"jimping is like a guthook,I can't see the simularities at all on that one.LOL.

I'm just guessing but I think he meant that a guthook and jimping are individual features that seem like a good idea (to some users) but neither one is really necessary in use. I don't believe that he meant that the two were similar in anyway.
