Buck Alpha 277 question

Mine is, at the rear of the blade - between the thumbstud and handle. "Back" side of blade (Buck logo is on the "front").

It's stamped:

BOS
ATS-34
U.S.A.

One thing I want to mention though is that mine was made before Buck moved their operations to Idaho.

I think that Buck listened to dave334! :)

ATS-34 is apparently a Japanese steel, and, well, if a knife didn't have a blade, it couldn't very well be a knife.... The way the law works, if a major portion of a product isn't made in the U.S.A., it cannot, legally, have the "U.S.A." stamp. I think that Buck has dodged a potential lawsuit, making the switch from ATS-34 to CM154 steel. And, it helps America, too!

IIRC, there are trademark issues as well. ATS-34 is not a grade of steel, it is a trademarked name for that steel and only that manufacturer can use that name. The same is true of CM154, BG-42, Stellite, etc.

Besides having to buy it from that mfg, if you use it you must display the tradename. IIRC, that is...CRS hitting me pretty hard lately...

El Pollo, et al...

Buck mentions ATS-34 as a propritary steel produced by Hitachi Steel Company on their (Buck) web site...so I'm guessing Buck has a license to use it. But I don't know the law, just providing for FYI.
Also reference to Crucible (S30V) and Timken Latrobe (BG-42) on the same page.

Actually both 154CM and ATS-34 are trade names.

As opposed to, for example, 420HC or 440C which are generic names.

see, for example http://www.engnath.com/public/steel.htm.

In other words, anyone can call their steel 440C if it meets the standards for what 440C is.

But no one other than Crucible can designate and market (etc.) steel as 154CM.

Same with Hitachi and ATS-34.

All the alpha hunters with rosewood scales are ATS-34, unless they are the new ones coming out with 154, but then the steels are pretty identical (different trade names) except for place of origin, here, or in Japan.

There was a folding alpha hunter that came out with brown wood scales that was 420HC, but that was limited (anyone comment more on this?).

Yeah, I can comment on it. Search the threads if you're bored outta your gourd for my ranting about the wobble mine has.
Then ask yourself, "why the hell doesn't that whiner send it in to be fixed by Buck?". The only answer I could give you is that I'm lazy.

See a pic of it at http://www.mongoosemarv.com/buck.html It is beneath the pic of the two "Victoria Secrets" models french kissing. ;)

You didn't seem like all that much of a "goose" to me. That explains it!

And to quote a famous Goose, "I would be very concerned about joining a club that would want me as a member." Now that may raise questions about the health of the BCCI......or its members!
