I've been looking at the new Buck Alpha Series. I checked it out on Bucks site. Everywhere I look it only lists the blade material as "Stainless Steel". We all know that's quite vague to say the least but on Bucks web page it also lists "Specialty Steel : Yes". So what specialty steel is it? Clearly it is not the standard 420HC. Is it BG-42, AUS-8, AUS-6 ? Certainly not D-2 as it is listed as stainless.

In the 2002 Buck catalog the 193, 194, 276 and 277 (rosewood handled Alpha's) are all marked as being ATS-34. I would have to assume that since the rubber handled versions (693, 694, 278 and 279) do not say what the steel is they are bladed in 420HC. I did pick up one of the 279 folders and it is one nice knife.
