I used to carry my Leatherman Charge xti all the time, but I now work in a place where I can't wear a belt sheath. So, I need a small knife that I can carry easily in a pants pocket. I've narrowed it down to the Buck Alpha Dorado and the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. Any opinions on the relative merits of these two knives, or pointers towards relevant product reviews? Thanks!

The Buck looks okay but I know about the Griptilian and you really can't go wrong.

Buck alpha dorado all the way:D, was my edc for 2 years, I have the dorado with the rosewood and 154Cm steel paul Bos HT, definitely a great knife, a little hard to sharpen at first but once its sharp it holds it well.
Matter of fact its in my pocket right now. (nothing against the Benchmade just i like 'em a little more traditional:)
cheers

eye candy:my dorado and my sons nobleman (also a really good knife)

Not a huge fan of the Buck, personally. Mini-grip all the way. ;)

Welp, I love my Spyderco knives for their utility but they all look ugly so the dorado shouldn't feel insulted.

Normally, I would recommend the Mini-Grip, but there is no way that I would part with my Alpha Dorado. Buck is a good choice.

I feel the same way, its one of my favorites and always in my small EDC pool:thumbup:

Buck will be better then any similar knife from any other manufacturers. Only problem that it is pretty conservative and slow moving, but if it is made by Buck (in US) I am pretty sure nobody will do better.

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. I am talking about quality of the blade to do cutting. If you are looking for more modern lock in knife, then it will be different story.

I'm looking for something functional, with a good blade that is comfortable to handle. As long as I can open it one-handed, it doesn't have to be switchblade-quick, and the lock doesn't have to be fancy, as long as it's secure.

Lots of people are recommending the mini-grip. For those folks, what aspects of the mini-grip lead you to prefer it?

If you really just want plain and simple look at a Cold Steel Voyager or Spyderco Endura/Delica. Both are extremely reliable lock backs with a great blade shape and ergos.

The Grip is my preferred out of the two you mentioned, but honestly I don't like the bulky handle on it. Spyderco's are a lot thinner with better ergos and blade steel.

I have Griptilian and I am not very impressed. This is only Benchmade with AXIS, if not reasonable, but affordable priced. And so anyone can afford this axis lock. But this axis lock is only what it have - everything is done to make it cheap. Like plastick handle, which is pretty thin and I can feel how it squized in my hand - plastic just bend a little, which gives it cheap feeling. Blade was out of balance and toch handle in closed position and so relatively soft coating got scratched in this place etc... This is of course may be just one my knife (it is D2 edition from Cabela's).

I guess if you are want Benchmade with AXIS lock for whatever reason - this will be best solution. But I can find much better solution for the price I paid.

In terms of best steel - check Spyderco ZDP189 Delica or Endura.

Thanks, Vassili.
