Hello!

I really like the alpha hunter folder without the guthook. Honestly it was like love on first sight!!!
But because i´m not familiar with folders can anybody tell me if this one would be a good choice. What special things do I have to pay attention to when buying a folder?

Thanks for answers!

Max

welcome to the Buck forum. I've not handled the Alpha, but as to your other question, i suggest Buck's web site and look for HOW TO BUY KNIVES. its very informative.

I noticed that in the online catalog, Buck lists the Alpha Hunter folder (277) as "specialty steel". Does anyone know what that means?Maybe ATS 34?

I have the 2002 catolog. It shows the Alfa Hunter in both fix blade and a folder available (folder sometime in June) in ATS 34 in rosewood handles only. The model number for the fixed blades are for the gut hook, 193, and the plain blade, 194. The model number for the folders in ATS 34 are for the gut hook, 276, and for the plain blade, 277. I have ordered the 277, but would rather have it in the black ruberized handle material instead of the wood. I may try to order the black handles separately. You may want to take a look at the Buck/Strider Solution depending upon your intended use. Hope this helps. Take care. Tony

Hey Admiral Numa, I have one of those 277's ordered too :) I can't wait for it to show up but I think it will be a while.

@SuperX:

I´ve also just orderd it! I think we´ve made a good choice! (hope so) But i think it will take a time to ship one from Buck to me in Germany! Would be kind of you, if you can tell me íf you get yours, so that I have an idea of time to get mine.

@ALL:

Thanks for all replies!

Bye, Max

I recently received an Alpha Hunter with ATS-34 steel. In a word: "Awesome!" Extremely sharp and hefty and a good looker too. My only concern is that on my model, the liner lock engages the blade far past the centre of the tang. That doesn't leave too much room for wear.

JimR and Admiral,
I ordered and have received the model 277. The blade steel is in ATS-34 with the BOS symbol for Paul Bos heat treating and that is stamped on the blade. It is quite a substantial knife in that the frame is made up mostly fairly thick steel with wood slabs. The liner lock thickness is thin compared to a Buck Strider model 888, but then that is built like a tank and costs substantially more. The lock works just fine. The blade is centered in the frame and there is no play when locked open either up or down or right or left. All the steel that makes the frame makes this a fairly heavy and subtantial knife in my opinion. I am very pleased with the knife and, although not a special run or edition, it will just go into the collection. I have other knives that I use for field work, but I just liked the looks of this one. Hopes this helps. Tony

Tony, how does your lock engage on you Alpha folder? Mine goes clear across the tang. While the lockup is solid with no play whatsoever, I'm concerned about how long it will wear to the point that it pushes against the bronze washer and cause up/down play.

El Cid,
The liner lock is perfectly centered on the blade. As you know you can send it back to Buck and their excellant customer service will take care of the problem. I have a number of occations to deal with them and I can't say enough about their excellant service. It is a hefty knife. Take care. Tony

Thanks Tony. I guess I was just thinking ahead. I'm used to seeing the linerlocks engage at the left or centre of the tang, but if any problems arise with my Alpha folder, it's good to know the folks at Buck will make it right. :cool:
