Hello!

I really like the alpha hunter folder without the guthook. Honestly it was like love on first sight!!!
But because i´m not familiar with folders can anybody tell me if this one would be a good choice. What special things do I have to pay attention to when buying a folder?

Thanks for answers!

Max

What to look for in folder depends on what you wish to use it for and what you are comfortable with. I look for user comfort, ease of opening and closing, solid construction, good materials, and the maker's reputation.

I too fell in love with the Buck Alpha at first sight. It is one attractive and well made folder. Mine is the ATS-34 version with rosewood scales on the handle and a very nice leather sheath. A 420HC version with black rubber scales and a cordura sheath is also available. Mine came scary sharp and locks solid and feels very good in the hand. Make no mistake, this is a heavy and robust folder, built to take care of any outdoor task. It is definately not made for pocket carry, unless you don't mind a heavy folder in your pocket.

The ATS-34 version has the Paul Bos "flame" logo like the Buck Strider, however, the liner is not as thick. It still provides a solid lockup with no play in any direction. One nice feature is that the scales are held together by hex screws so you can easily remove the scales should you want to "customize" the handle with stag, bone, G-10 or other material. Buck has always put out good quality sheaths, but this one can be worn horizontally as well as vertically unlike the sheath on the 110.

I've carried the Alpha folder everyday on my belt and have used it for general mundane tasks as well as heavy cutting on cardboard and rope and it has so far performed admirably. The folder has dual thumbstuds so you can open it left or right handed and the action is very very smooth. Overall, I'm very impressed by it and feel it's one of the most attractive folders on the market which would make any hunter or outdoorsman proud to own.

I to fell in love with the alpha folder. I havent received mine yet, ordered the ats-34 version, from looking at it, would make a wonderful camp knife, but a liitle to big for everyday carry. I make my own folders tradional/tactical and sheath knives, Indian primitve trade era, I'm very picky (If Im not satisfied with what I make, no one will ever receive it) It looks well made and I have to say it may restore my faith in buck. I have to admit I havent been too impressed with some of the "cutlery" they've been producing the last few years (quality control, ect.) this should be intersting.

I like the Alpha hunter the first time I saw it also. I have put off ordering one until I heard some reviews on it, and now it looks like I will be making a call!

The Alpha Hunter, possibly the only Buck that I liked and considered buying.

It is a very hefty folder, real smooth. The one that I handled had some blade play in all four directions. Adjusting the screws did help but it was still some play.
Even with that said, I would still consider it as a futre purchase.

I've handled two of them and I cannot stand the excessive bladeplay. Wish they made the liner a little thinner too.

I like the size though. Kinda reminds me of my Tomcat.

i had bought one and had excessive blade play (wobbleing), back and forth) on mine so I sent it back. I have to say it is a fairly well made knife, a bit too heavy though. There are a few changes I would make to it if i could. a thicker liner lock, as heavy as the knife is it seems that it could use a thicker lock. a larger blade stop, it has a decent size stop pin sleeve, but the actual pin itself is a bit thin, it seems this could be the weak point of the knife. for those of you like myself who make knives, liner locks in particular look at one close you'll see what I mean. the other issue is the weight its a bit on the heavy side, could use it as a club. Even with all that said I was impressed by the overall quality, but the blade play is definitely a problem. Joe from buck did offer to make things right for which was commendable, but mine is allready on the way back to the store. he had said that some of the knives going out had not been properly screwed when they were loctited. I still like the knife, perhaps one day I'll try again if I get brave:(

I checked out 2 Alphas at a local dealer and none had any blade play. Buck will fix it if any problems arise. I do agree that for a heavy knife I would have liked a thicker liner for the lock.
