So iv been looking at the buck alpha hunter (black rubber scales model 279) and I'm kinda skepticle about bucks 420hc. Does anybody have one of these or could anybody shed some light on this knife?

I wouldn't be skepticle . My daughter has one and has used it on a great many things with no problems . Also, Buck made that model with several premuim steels so, one of those may be more to your liking . DM

Bucks 420hc is a great bang for the buck. Easy to sharpen and holds an edge pretty well-legenday heat treater Paul Bos has been responsible for making it a great all around knife steel. Of course I agree wit DM that the premiums are preferred, I have the 154cm-my buddy has the standard and is thrilled with it.

Its a great knife! Its one of my favorite models for hunting, but I prefer the looks of the wood handled version, but I like the nylon sheath of the rubber handled one :D Also the rubber version has great grip! Let us know what you think when you buy it!! ;)

Ok so ill keep you guys updated on my thoughts of the quality, I just bought it and my initial thoughts were what a solid knife. Sharp as hell out of the package, but we shall see after the cut tests.

Well I must say after cut tests today I'm accually pretty impressed. Did a few things, dry dead wood, plastic, cardboard. What I was really impressed about was the free standing tests. I set up a few things and took a swing at them such as a tim hortons coffee cup, plastic strapping that wasn't attached to anything, and the most impressive was the cigarette. I set up a cigarette and took a swing at it. Sure it broke but it still had a clean cut above the break. All of this was with the factory edge, so from what I have seen, this knife can dish it out and. Maybe not require the maintenance of my other knives.

I hope this is the right place to ask this.

The liner lock on my Buck 279 Alpha engages past the halfway spot on the (tang I think you guys call it.) Or whatever part the linerlock engages on.

Is that ok? I used a mgnifying glass and really scrutinized it and I can still see about a quarter of the blade part that engages the liner lock.

It's got a solid lock up and is tight with no play when it engages.

Quick update. I just tightened the pivot screw a little at a time and the liner lock now stops halfway.

It's a little tighter opening it but not bad at all. It's still smooth as ice. It will pop open with a wrist flick as well.

Thanks.
